Description

Ported from the model created by Lazarus Starkweather for Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Original model created using SketchUp by Trimble Software.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

Kilo is the NATO code name for the Soviet Navy's Project 688 Paltus ("halibut") class diesel-electric attack submarines (SSK).  They first entered service at the end of 1980 and it is believed that 24 were eventually built before production switched to the improved Kilo class (Project 636.3 Varshavyanka, over 50 hulls and counting per some reports).  It is considered one of the most successful diesel submarine designs from the end of the Cold War.  While diesel submarines many seem a World War II era throwback to some given that many modern subs are nuclear powered and are both faster and have more endurance, a diesel "boat" has one big advantage over a "nuke boat:"  it's a LOT quieter when traveling submerged.  It runs off of big batteries like a modern electric car, which are charged by the diesels whenever the sub is running on the surface.  To make them even more quiet, later Kilos were fitted with a a special but very durable rubber-like noise-reducing surface that make them almost impossible to detect while underway, even with the most modern sonar equipment.  On another note, diesel boats are more suited for patrolling coastal waters where operating ranges are far shorter, and that's why many nations still use them.  Kilo was successfully exported to no less than ten other nations, with China and India getting the most.  China got anywhere from eight to twelve (sources vary on the total number) purchased in three separate lots, while India purchased ten (reclassified in Indian naval service as the Sindugosh class), of which nine are still operational.  Other nations that have or still use Kilo class diesel boats include Vietnam, Iran, Venezuela, Algeria, Rumania, and Poland.  Production continues today as I write this (early 2021) with the improved Kilo class, both for the Russian Federation (to both supplement and replace older diesel boats) and for export purposes.  To find out more about the Kilo and improved Kilo classes, follow the links below:

This is a straight port of the original model, with my only changes being to alter and resize some of the textures so they would work better with the model ported to the common OBJ format.

This is not my model.  All I did was port and adapt it for use with the common OBJ model format.  Please credit Lazarus Starkweather for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my part.
