Description

Ported to OBJ from the model created by Lazarus Starkweather for Microsoft's Combate Flight Simulator 2 (CFS2).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The last class of nuclear guided missile submarines (SSGN) built for the Soviet Navy before the downfall of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the end of the Cold War, Project 949A Antey - or Oscar II as it was code-named by NATO at the time - is a reworked Granit (Oscar I) lengthened by 10 meters in order to provide extra room for its newer and quieter nuclear propulsion system, as well as for improved electronics.  This makes them the third largest submarines of the Cold War era, behind the Soviet Typhoon and USN Ohio class SSBNs respectively.  Its underwater performance is said to be comparable to that of the older Akula nuclear attack submarines, which is surprising given its larger size but no doubt assisted a great deal by its new propulsion system and its twin seven-bladed propellers.  Those were a first for a Soviet submarine of its type and purpose.  These began entering Soviet naval service in the 1980s, with construction interrupted by the fall of the Soviet Union.  The successor Russian Federation had to make some hard choices in order to maintain a credible submarine force for its navy given the extremely limited funds available at the time, so all of the older Oscar Is were decommissioned and scrapped in order to keep the newer Oscar IIs in service.  Enough funding was available by the end of the 1990s to resume class construction, and all remaining boats save one were apparently finished and entered service by the end of the millennium.  In 2011 the Russian Federation announced plans to modernize them under the designation Project 949AM, and in 2012 work resumed on the last remaining incomplete Oscar II, the Belgorod, with the intent of both finishing it and modifying it during construction to serve as a specialized deep sea research vessel - but still capable of carrying certain types of large nuclear weaponry as needed.  Belgorod was officially launched in 2019 and at last report was undergoing her final fitting-out and addition of extra gear and equipment needed for its new role before it officially enters service.  To find out more about the Oscar II (Antey) class SSGNs, follow the link below:

This is a straight port of the original model.  My only changes were to alter and resize some of the textures so they would work better with the model ported to the common OBJ format.

This is not my model.  All I did was port and adapt it for use with the common OBJ model format.  Please credit Lazarus Starkweather for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my part.

TRIVIA - The most famous member of the Oscar II class is the Kursk (K-141), which was lost in the Barents Sea on 12 August 2000 in a tragic accident that made world news headlines at the time.  Rather than tell you about it, here's a link:
