Tango (NATO code name) was intended to be the successor to the highly successful Foxtrot class diesel-electric submarines of the Cold War era Soviet Navy. It was known to the Russians as Project 641B Som Buki, or "Catfish." It borrowed the sonar from the Delta class SSBNs and the hull form of the Julietts (although in stretched form), but internally it was for the most part an enlarged Foxtrot with more powerful engines and more batteries for extended underwater operating range and duration (up to a week if need be). They officially entered service with the Soviet Navy in 1972, but only eighteen (18) were built before production was terminated. The reasons for this remain unclear, although most Western naval authorities believe that Tango was an interim diesel-electric boat design that was dropped as soon as the more advanced Kilo entered production in 1980. None were exported, and all wound up serving with the Soviet Northern fleet prior to the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. They remained in service with the successor Russian Federation until 2016. At least one was saved from the scrapper's torch for use as a museum ship (Hull B-307), and can be visited today at the AutoVAZ Technical Museum in Togliatti (Tolyatti), Samara Oblast, Russia.
