Description
Ported to OBJ from the model originally created by GerritJ9 for Silent Hunter 4 (SH4) by Ubisoft and which has since turned up in many other fan efforts for the Silent Hunter series of games. This is the Silent Hunter 3 (SH3) port. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
The Berta class shallow draft tankers were originally built in the late 1920s by famed British shipbuilders Harland and Wolff for Anglo-Saxon Petroleum (ASP), a privately owned British subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell. They were built the way they were, with very shallow drafts for tankers, because they had to navigate the shallow channel that connected Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela with the Caribbean Sea. Because of this they were also known as lake tankers or Lake Maracaibo tankers (full form) in the vernacular of the time. There were four all told, built in two groups of two, all in 1927. Berta and Brigida were first, and then they were followed by Paula and Petronella. They quietly did the job they were designed for until World War II broke out. Berta wound up with the British for the duration of the war but the other three remained under Dutch control, with both Paula and Petronella requisitioned for military use and sent to the East Indies to act as naval auxiliary tankers. Both Berta and Brigida would survive the war, with Berta being returned to Dutch control after it was over. Both would continue to serve well into the early Cold War era, with Berta being renamed Shell Dezoito at some point, before both were pulled from service and scrapped due to their age -- the former Berta in 1962 and Brigida in 1954. Petronella was lost during the war when she hit a mine and sank in the Gulf of Nauplia on 15 October 1944. As for Paula's tale, she gets a separate entry at C21VN due to what happened to her during the war. Here's the link:

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways. You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).
If you are ripping this yourself, this is listed as the "British Medium Old Tanker" in many fan mods. It may also be listed as "Tanker Paula," or "OM_Paula," or some variation thereof. The Berta class has a very unique visual profile as you can see for yourself in the preview piccy, so watch for it under some variation of the names given above.
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
NOTE - Berta class tankers were operated by the British, Dutch, and Japanese at various times roughly during the middle third of the 20th century, so you can use these as both civvies and naval auxiliaries with all three given their history. They were also British built, hence the "British Medium Old Tanker" designation in the Silent Hunter series. You might also want to consider using this model as a placeholder or to cover for other shallow draft tankers of the era. Still another consideration is the shallow draft of these vessels, which allow them to go places a normal deep draft tanker cannot (!).
