The appearance of the Soviet Navy's Alfa class nuclear-powered attack submarine (Project 705, original Russian nae Lyra) during the 1970s caused quite a stir among the NATO powers during the Cold War.  They were the fastest submarines (when submerged) in the world at the time they entered service, bested only by the class prototypes (Papa class).  This was due largely to Alfa's streamlined titanum hull, which was a novelty at the time.  Its onboard lead-bismuth cooled fast nuclear reactor was also significantly smaller than other contemporary designs, which made for a smaller and lighter boat and also helped increase speed.  This also limited their uses, because the reactor had to be kept "warm" or running all the time, shortening its operational lifetime, and they operated mainly as very fast submarine interceptors while in service.  Despite its operational imitations and the fact that it never saw combat during its service lifetime, Alfa nonetheless had a major impact on both submarine warfare and submarine technology during the Cold War.  The Soviets got a lot of propaganda value out of Alfa, always claiming they had more than they actually did, and the influence of Alfa is obvious on the subsequent Akula class.  The United States responded with its own ADCAP program and the British with Spearfish, both to produce torpedoes capable of catching and destroying an Alfa while submerged and running at top speed.  Later, the United States would even arrange for the successful covert theft for later study of some of the special enriched uranium fuel used in the Alfa class (Project Sapphire).  All of the Alfas had fairly short service lives due to their unique technology, and in the end France was called in (as a fellow nuclear power) to help build special equipment for their decommissioning, since normal equipment couldn't be used because of that.  Only seven Alfas total are known to have been built, and none survive today.  To find out more about Alfa, follow the link below:

This is the game stock model as ripped by others, with no changes by me of which I am aware.

This is not my model.  All I did was port it to OBJ for you.  Please credit Killerfish Games for the original.  You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.
