Description

Ported to OBJ from the game stock model that was first introduced in Silent Hunter 3 by Ubisoft and has since been reused both in other games in the series and modified/retextured by series fans for their various efforts.  This particular example comes from the Soviet Waterway (SW) mod for Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition (SH4G or SH4 1.5) but can also be found in other forms in other mods.  Modified from the game stock Pinguin AMC model.  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The classic old (Ger. alt) Hansa freighter label is generally used to describe a group of 60-odd cargo ships or freighter transports that were built in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s during the interwar period.  The name comes from DDG Hansa (Deutsche Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft Hansa), the name of the German shipping company that originally operated many of them.  They came in various shapes and sizes, although the most common ones fell into the 7000-8000 GRT range.  The well known Ehrenfels class freighter from this time period can be considered a Hansa freighter sub-class.  In the Silent Hunter series the two different types of Hansa freighter, old and new, are distinguished by the size and the shape of their stacks.  Old Hansa freighters are larger and have very large upright single stacks, while newer Hansa freighers in the game are somewhat smaller and have modern-looking tapered stacks, large at the base and smaller at the top.  It should also be noted that all old Hansa freighters were powered by oil-fired steam turbines and thus carried the worldwide naval prefixes of either "S.S." (Eng. steamship) or "D.S." (Ger. dampschiff), while a fair portion of newer Hansa freighters were diesel powered and carry the worldwide naval prefixes of either "M.V." (Eng. motor vessel) or "M.S." (Ger. motorschiff).  New Hansa freighters that were also steam powered carried the "S.S." or "D.S." prefixes just like the old ones did.  This is a videogame conceit to be sure, but it helps to keep things simple for gaming purposes.

The models used for the old Hansa freighter sometimes varies depending on who did the mod.  This particular example is a degunned Stier commerce raider model that's been retextured in drab civilian colors and further retrograded by having all of its hidden gun ports removed so it can serve as a pure commercial vessel.  In real life Stier was converted from the German freighter Cairo, which was an old Hansa freighter.  FYI this same model gets used as the German blockadebrecher (blockade runner) in other Silent Hunter series mods, probably for the sake of convenience.  The fan-created NACA freighter is also sometimes used to represent the old Hansa freighter type, as well as the Ehrenfels class freighter model (fan-modded Pinguin AMC derivative).  All three are technically correct for the type, and I guess in the end it comes down to the personal preference of the modder.  I should also point out that in reality old Hansa freighters came in a variety of topside configurations.  Sometimes they had a wide space between the forward deckhouse and their single large funnel as you see above, sometimes the funnel was moved forward directly behind the deckhouse for an extra aft cargo hold (like the NACA freighter model), sometimes the forward deckhouse was moved aft to sit in front of the funnel for an extra cargo hold forward (like Ehrenfels), and sometimes the two were brought together amidships and the length of the hull reduced accordingly to come up with the smaller old Hansa type freighters, very simlilar to the Baltic type freighter from this era, as you can see in this image:

As far as I know only the later versions of the Knights of the Sea Depths (KSD) fan mods for SH4G/SH4 1.5 show the greatest variety of old Hansa freighter types, albeit in both their original civilian and converted German commerce raider (hilfskreuzer) forms.

Finally, the old Hansa freighter should not be confused with the later coal-burning standardized Hansa wartime types (A, B, and C) that were built from 1943 to 1945.  That was a separate program entirely that came about under the sponsorship of the Nazi German government, and those were more of a cookie-cutter type design than what you got with the older Hansa freighters.

This is a straight port with no changes by me save to increase the saturation and contrast of the original SW textures, as they came out looking rather washed-out after my port to OBJ.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways.  You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

ASIDE - I've also come across scattered references to a "fast Hansa" type freighter in certain Silent Hunter series sources, although I'm not sure what's going on there.  The old Hansa freighter has a top speed of 17.5 knots, the new Hansa 18.5 knots, and the "fast Hansa" 19.7 knots. with all three displacing in the 7500-7850 ton range.  Again, I'm not sure what's going on there, but I'm hoping I'll eventually find out at some point.  (grin-and-wink)
