The Type VIIB U-boat fielded by the Nazi German Navy or Reichkriegsmarine (RKM) during World War II doesn't get as much attention these days as a class as does the pioneering Type VIIA or its own more prolific successor, the acclaimed Type VIIC and its derivatives. Nevertheless it was an important step in the development of the Type VII series as a whole. Its biggest improvement over the Type VIIA was the addition of saddle tanks (as with the smaller Type IID coastal U-boat), which almost doubled its fuel storage and greatly increased its operating range (from 4300 to 6500 nautical miles, at either top speed or at normal cruising speed, both while surfaced). The original Type VIIA's limited operating range in comparison had been its only real drawback as an oceangoing fleet boat. Other improvements also helped make them far better boats than the original Type VIIs. They had better engines which made them faster and more able to handle crash dives and surface blows and such. They wer the first German U-boats of the era fitted with dual rudders instead of a single large rudder. This change made them far more agile and would become a standard feature for almost all later U-boat classes. It should also be noted that some internal rearrangements allowed them to carry a total of fourteen torpedoes, three more than the Type VIIA, and with that rearrangement came the ability to reload their stern tube from inside (a big improvement over the Type VIIA's externally loaded stern tube). Most Type VIIBs were also fitted with two 20mm light AA guns instead of just one, along with their standard 88mm deck gun, as a response to the increasing use of aircraft by the British in attacking surfaced U-boats. The entire class was very active during World War II, with some of the most famous U-boats and U-boat actions involving Type VIIBs. Tye Type VIIB U-boat U-47, for example, successfully sank the British battleship Royal Oak while at anchor at Scapa Flow on 14 October 1939 in one of the most daring and successful attacks by a U-boat on the British Royal Navy during the entire war. U-48, the most successful U-boat of the war, was also a Type VIIB. Two more of the most famous U-boats of the war, U-99 and U-100, were also both Type VIIBs. Finally, the later original Type VIIC was essentially a Type VIIB lengthened by two feet for the addition of an active sonar set and other minor mechanical improvements. Only 24 Type VIIBs were built before production switched over to the long-lived Type VIIC (and its derivatives), and all would be lost by war's end. While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways. You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).
