Description
Ported from the generic model in the M09A slot included with iambecomelife's massive Merchant Fleet Mod (MFM) for Silent Hunter 3 (SH3), and which is described as a "City of Dallas Class Merchant" in the fan-made MFM master ship type list. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
City of Dallas was originally ordered under the name Lake Fillion by the United States Shipping Board in 1918 and built by American Shipbuilding of Toledo, Ohio as part of the massive merchant shipbuilidng program by the United States that was prompted by its entry into World War I. She was an EFMC Design 1099 design cargo ship (not to be confused with Design 1029) and was part of the third batch of Lake class freighters built during the World War I era as part of the USSB effort (the earlier Lakes were Design 1020s and Design 1093s respectively). The war ended before she was completed in 1919 and she operated directly under the auspices of the USSB until 1924, when she was sold to the Southern Steamship Company of Wilmington, NC and renamed City of Dallas at that time. In 1942 following the United States entry into World War II (thanks to Pearl Harbor), City of Dallas was requisitioned for military use and was assigned for supply ship duty by the War Transportation Corps. She operated mainly in support of the U.S. Army, and was one of the many ships that supported General Douglas Macarthur's southern Pacific offensive drive during the war. In March of 1943 she was at Hollandia, New Guinea when she was accidentally rammed and severely holed by her fellow transport Lake Ormoc. The damage proved too severe to repair on-site and so she was beached and left there until after the war. Her wreck was eventually refloated long after the war in 1954, and repaired sufficiently to tow her to Hikari, where she was broken up. This is a straight port with no changes by me.
I should note in passing that this model may not be wearing the correct paint scheme for the real ship in this era. That's because MFM swaps around its generic set of textures with the 120 or ship models included with it in order to generate the 800+ generic merchants and tankers it can add to any SH3 gaming session. The proper textures or something close to them are probably somewhere in MFM, but I will leave it to others with more diligence and greater insistence on historical accuracy to dig them out and put them on the model, or to make their own custom ones if need be. All I needed was this single image to let you know that the model is in the mod, and that way you folks can take it from there.
While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways. You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
NOTE - This also makes for a decent generic EFMC Type 1099 cargo ship model with the appropriate texture changes as your needs require.
ASIDE - There are generic sea grey and blue-grey textures in the MFM texture set, if you want to depict City of Dallas in World War II military service (USAT City of Dallas) or use this model to depict any of her sister Lake class vessels that were also requisitioned for military use during the war.
