S.S. Funchal was built in Denmark by Helsingør Skibsvaerft A/S (Elsinore Shipyards in English) under the guidance of the noted Portuguese naval engineer Rogerio d'Oliveria as a classic 10,000 ton ocean liner, painstakingly faithful to such and built to the highest standards for cruise ships at the time. She was the biggest ship built at Helsingør since World War II. She commenced her first cruise on 4 November 1961 for her Portuguese owners, CPTM, and was rated to carry 400 passengers total in three different classes (First Class, Tourist A, and Tourist B). She always looked bigger than she actually was given the way she was designed, with the noted insurance firm Lloyds of London saying of Funchal that she "must surely rank as one of the most attractive small liners the postwar period." She replaced the aging S.S. Lima (ex-Westerwald) on the Lisbon to Madera and St. Michaels cruise ship run and did it so well that she quickly gained a reputation for excellence. This also earned her the unofficial honor of being chartered by the Portuguese government for various official functions, and because of that she earned her nickname as the unofficial Presidental yacht in Portugal at the time. (smile) By 1969 Funchal began to suffer intermittent boiler issue, which became more pronounced as the years rolled by, so in 1972 she was taken out of service and reboilered. It was also at this time that her classic original paint scheme, which is depicted on this CG model, was replaced by a series of ones that finally ended up with her repainted almost entirely white. Once Funchal returned to service she was put on the South American cruise ship run and did that until 1984, when CPTM went belly-up. Funchal was purchased by a British business consortium, was again refitted, and became the first cruise ship to become part of the Classic International Cruises fleet (CIC). Funchal not only retained her original popularity but saw it grow as part of the CIC fleet over the years that followed, making the round of various European ports in the summer and cruising to Brazil during the winter. She was refitted again in 1993. with three of her aft decks extended to provide more room for her passengers. Sadly, in 1997, she had to be refitted yet again in order to conform with new safety standards for cruise ships, and it was at this time that most of her wood-based interior and her original inside open spiral staircase were removed and replace with material of more safety-conscious (and uglier) design. In 2003 she was reassigned to the Australia cruise ship run, which wound up being her last major change in assignments. She returned to Lisbon in 2011 for what was supposed to be yet another in-service refit, but it turned out to be her last voyage due to the passing away of her current owner, whose family decided to liquidate CIC instead of continuing it. All of its properties were subsequently put up for sale, and SS Funchal was among them. She was saved from a high bit by a ship scrapping firm from India by a consortium of Portugese businessmen, who outbid the scrappers in an attempt to return her to service, but they went bust a year later and Funchal again went up for sale. She was bought for 3 million euros in 2021 by the UK-based Signature Living, who intended to turn her into a floating hotel. Her final destination will be Liverpool, England, where it is hoped she will do as well in her new life as she did in her original incarnation. This is a straight port with no changes by me. It depicts SS Funchal in her original classic livery. If you want her in her later paint schemes then you will have to make the appropriate custom textures yourself.
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit Henrik Nielsen as the original creator if you use this in any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for my part.
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
ASIDE - It is my understanding from the original README file that Mr. Nielsen does not object to you either making your own custom textures for his model or modding the model itself for whatever reason, so long as he is given credit for the original. Please post a link in the Comments below if you do, so you can share your work with the rest of us. Thank you.
