... oh-kay ...

"Monster Illusion" (Part 2) was not on the original Star Trek pilot music release twin CD set ("The Cage"/"Where No Man ...") back in the day, nor will you find the original version in the very expensive TOS soundtrack box set containing 99% of all the music ever used in TOS.  What you'll find there instead is the Wilbur Hatch remixed version that was used for later episodes.  It's titled simply "Monster Illusion" and it's in with the Season 3 common BGMs and suites and such.  I personally don't think the Hatch remix is as nice as the original, but perhaps that's a matter of opinion.  Anyway, the original "Cage" version of "Monster Illusion" (Part 2) is on the 50th anniversary commemorative 4-CD set, along wiith some more extra, alternate, and updated TOS tracks (including the complete TAS BGM library BTW!), as well as with more selections from the later original timeline shows such as TNG and DS9.  The original is also not on any of the fan-mixed versions of the soundtrack from "The Cage" that are currently on YouTube, although this may change after somebody reads this (chuckle).  You'll know this BGM as soon as you hear it, since it occurs at a very dramatic point in "The Cage" and is reused in other episodes.  Once you do you be asking the question, "Why was this left out?  It's such an iconic piece of TOS music!"  Simple question, simple answer:  there wasn't enough room to fit the complete episode soundtrack on one CD, so something had to be left out.

UPDATED! - I now have a good link for this BGM track.  See next page.
