COMMENTS:

God, but those robots were heavy - Chief Davison had her men remove the remains of the robots and dump them out in the hallway in order to clear more space for laying the transponder grid.  It also made the scene easier to pose without them there (less models, less memory constraints, software runs faster!).

Filter masks - See TOS "The Cloud Minders" and TAS "The Infinite Vulcan."  The term and one type comes from the former, and a different type is used in the other.

This isn't explicitly stated or shown, but Dr. McCoy and Chief Davison had Scotty beam up the earlier landing party's phasers to test their makeshift transponder grid.  If you'll look in the background in the alcove on the next-to-last panel, you'll see that both the phasers and communicators are missing from in there.  The communicators are being used for the grid, and I just told you what happened to the phasers.  That's also another means of me reducing the number of models in the scene to simplify it more for faster posing.

I had to cut some additional dialogue from my draft of this added scene (not part of the original short story) that takes place right after Scotty reports that he's got the filter masks ready to beam down as soon as Dr. McCoy wants them.  In the draft his voice drops a bit as he adds, "Doctor, I hate to ask, but ...."  McCoy would have looked over at Chief Davison, who would have looked back, then he would have turned back to his communicator and spoke.  "She's still alive, Scotty, as are the rest, and we're going to do everything possible to keep it that way, okay?"  Scotty would have smiled faintly and said, "Thank you, Doctor.  Scott out."  With the call to the ship ended, that's when Chief Davison would have asked about the filter masks.  Compare this with how Scotty's behavior was described at the start of Act I, after he had learned that his girlfriend Jan[ice Rand] had apparently vanished along with the rest of Lt. Kelly's landing party (link is below, top row of page, last three panels).
