Description
STAR TREK - New Vistas
produced by Richard Mandel
based on STAR TREK created by Gene Roddenberry
Episode 2x03 - "The Hunting"
DESCRIPTION
Fleet Admiral Nogura has granted the Enterprise and her crew a week of shore leave on the frontier planet of Rhinegelt as a special reward for helping to establish close relations between the Federation and the border world of Arcos on her last mission (see "Surprise!"). Both officers and crew intend to thoroughly enjoy themselves in multiple ways during their leave; that is, all save one individual. For First Officer Spock, this will be the first clear chance in years he has had to complete an arcane Vulcan ritual long delayed by various things ever since he left his home world. Once he gets wind of it then Dr. McCoy insists on going along for the ride, remembering too well what happened the last time Spock got involved in Vulcan rituals (see TOS "Amok Time"). It's a good thing that McCoy does, for when the ritual takes a rather drastic turn then McCoy may be the only one with the skills and knowledge to save Spock ... that is, provided an out-of-control Spock doesn't kill him first. Adapted from the classic Trek fan short story by Doris Beetem, as published in the first volume of the Star Trek: The New Voyages anthologies by Bantam Books.

No, you're not seeing things. That IS an astellia-allaea lion filling in for the owltiger as called for in the original short story. I think it makes for a fair substitute given its high tufted ears, which are one of the features of the original story's owltiger and evoke those of the Terran great horned owl. I didn't move the fangs in as called for to evoke a beak-like appearance, though. I decided it would be easier to use the model as-is. XD BTW here's the link to the XPS port by Tough-Turtle-Dragon, if you need this for your own varioius projects. Be sure to disable the textures for both the helmet and armor if you want it to look like you see above:
BTW and I'm going to warn you in advance, I will be padding out the story with some extra STNV elements on the side and taking place at the same time as Spock and McCoy's little adventure down on the surface during their shared shore leave. The original would have made a nice half-hour TAS episode back in the day (we can but dream, *sigh*) but it's too short for a full hour-long one without a lot of "sweeping vista" scenery shots padding it out and all that. I hope Ms. Beetem forgives me, and I hope the rest of you will understand.
