UPDATED 2021/03/30 - Replaced the low poly model from Top Gun: Hard Lock with the higher quality one from the Call of Duty: World at War series
Ported to OBJ and further modified by me from the model provided by our friends at the Pack 3D website. Original is from the Call of Duty: World at War series. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. To download, click on the Download icon.
The littoral combat ship (LCS) project by the U.S. Navy (USN) is essentially its 21st century take on the concept of the corvette, the smallest class of surface warship recognized for naval warfare purposes. The last time the U.S. Navy fielded corvettes was in World War II (Tacoma class), but the capabilities of the 21st century Independence class are far and away above those of its World War II predecessor. Independence is one of two LCS classes being built for the USN (the other being the more conventional Freedom class) as a low cost and more flexible alternative to building more frigates. The idea driving the LCS program is that of a small 1,000 ton-ish multirole warship that could go where large surface combatants could not; mainly shallow coastal waters. Independence is the more radical of the two LCS designs approved for procurement, featuring a trimartan hull with angled upperworks for stealth capability, a Spruance-style modular design allowing its weaponry and onboard systems to be easily reconfigured or even replaced for specialized tasks, and both a large aft flight deck and internal hangar/hull storage for even more multi-mission capability. The first of the Independence class entered service in 2010, with more building and even more planned. On the down side, the Independence program has suffered from massive cost overruns and mission creep, as well as severe problems with galvanic corrosion of their hulls in the first two ships ordered. Because of this those first two ships will be decommissioned earlier than planned, while the rest either in service or currently building with be fitted with new hull anti-corrosion systems. This is a straight port with no changes by me.
Please bear in mind the modular design of Independence. That means you can replace this model's weapons with different ones (appropriately scaled and limited to available mounts/deck space/internal volume, of course!) if you need to reconfigure it for a particular role or mission for your personal 3D projects.
