Kresta was the Soviet Navy's second purpose-built guided missile cruiser class during the Cold War, following the earlier Kynda, and entered service in the mid-1960s. There are two distinct versions or production blocks, Kresta I and Kresta II, and this happened due to a major change in Soviet naval doctrine as the class was being built. This CG model is of Kresta II, the later ASW version, and the following features make it visually distinct from Kresta I:
- Kresta II is 12 feet longer than Kresta I
- Kresta II has a more pronounced rake to its bow than does Kresta I
- Kresta II's massive Top Sail radar atop its forward deckhouse tower
- Kresta II's quad SA-N type missile launchers port and starboard of the forward deckhouse, as opposed to Kresta I's dual SS-N launchers
- Kresta II's enlarged superstructure and its extra two-level deckhouse built up between the main stack and aft deckhouse
Kresta II began entering Soviet Navy service in 1967, with the tenth and last ship in the class joining the fleet in 1974. Production was discontinued in favor of the Kara class. They served the Soviet Union all the way until its end, but were scrapped as soon as possible by the Russian Federation, its succesor, due to both age and a serious lack of funds to overhaul and refit them with newer naval technologies. I have made only two changes to this model. First, I had to provide my own custom textures for some of the radars, as they were not included in Pack 3D's archive at the time I downloaded it. Second, I retextured the main deck a darker shade of rust orange, so this would better match with my other Cold War era Soviet Navy warship models in my online Virtual Navy gallery.
