Description

Ported to OBJ from the fan created model included with the Russian language Soviet Waterway (SW) mod for Silent Hunter 4 Gold Edition (SH4G or SH4 1.5).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

The M class or Malyutka class in Russian (Rus. "baby" or "little one") actually comprised a group of four different classes of small coastal submarines - Types VI, VIbis, XII, and XV - that were built for the Soviet Navy (Sovetsky flot) during World War II.  (NOTE - The 3D model preview piccy above shows a Type VIbis M class)  They were very simple, easy to build, and designed in such a way that they could be disassembled and shipped in sections by rail to whatever part of the vast Russian ocean coast or whichever inland sea they were needed the most.  Welding was used whenever possible to help speed and simply construction, marking the first time this was done with a Soviet sub class, and because of that the Malyutka is often credited with being the world's first welded-hull submarine.  They were originally designed with a operating range of only 800 nautical miles, with a typical patrol being 10-14 days and armed with just two torpedoes, but these numbers would change and improve with later versions as the war went on and more was demanded of them.  They began construction in 1932 and work on the class would continue through the end of the war, with 11 unfinished Type XV Malayutkas left over at war's end (and of which only three would be completed with the rest scrapped unfinished).  Most were made inland first and then transported by rail to other locations for final fitting out.  Malyutkas fought in every theater where the Soviet Navy had any presence during the war.  They were considered good boats for their size and their crews made the most of them; however, they were not as successful as other Soviet fleet boats given their limited range and combat capabilties.  33 of the 140 built were lost during World War II, or about 1/4th of the full group.  All but a few were eventually disposed of after the war and the rest sold off either to friendly Communist allies such as China and North Korea, or to Soviet satellite powers.  Both in turn disposed of them years and even decades later after they had been worn out from years of service.  Although no intact Malyutka is known to survive today, the wrecks of two have since been found - one in Tallin Bay in 2012 that was known to have been stripped down and sunk in a training exercise, and a badly damaged and mostly buried wartime wreck near Constanta on the Romanian coast.  To find out more about the Soviet M or Malyutka class submarines of the World War II era, follow the links below:

This is a straight port with no changes by me save to retexture the guns so their colors would match with the rest of the boat.  They were cornflower blue on the original model, probably from using an available canned texture.

While I am no longer making my OBJ ports of Silent Hunter series models available for public download, you can get this yourself in one of two ways.  You can extract it piecemeal from the game data using the free SKWAS/s3ditor model utility and rebuild it in your preferred 3D modeling software, or you can rip it directly from the game after installing any necessary mods or mod packs noted above using any good 3D model ripper (3D Ripper DX or NinjaRipper recommended).

For non-profit, non-commercial use only.

ASIDE - This model can be easily modded to represent the original M class Type VI with a simple conning tower swap.  It is also fairly easiy to mod for the M class Type XII, requiring both a conning tower swap and slight modifications to the hull to represent its increased fuel storage.  Significantly more work will be required to mod it for the advanced M class Type XV, given its all-new hull design with four torpedo tubes instead of only two.
