Description
**Warning LARGE FILE**A quick look into my process for making Jedah from Darkstalkers.
You can view the original here:

1.) Pencils on 11x 17 copy paper, Scanned in at 400 DPI full size
2.) Brought scan into illustrator and digitally inked the line work. Once the inks have been finished I export the line work with transparency as a PSD at full size. The rest of the work I do strictly in photoshop.
3.) Lay down base colors otherwise known as flats (Although I usually add a bit of gradient to mine so I can figure out a possible light source)
4.) Put down first set of shadows based, corrected the light source a bit.
5.) Started adding small highlights for metal and body parts that are directly in the light.
6.) Added a secondary back light (the red light). Added more rim light to his back side.
7.) Started a simple background to give him footing. I put him on a cliff high above a pool of blood, similar to his stage in the game. Added basic texture work to the rocks.
8.) Added mist and smoke plumes behind him that are emanating from the blood below. Also added blood vein work that are emanating from his feet, similiar to what happens when he walks or does a move in the game.
9.) Color correction time! I wanted to puch the background back a bit with hue and saturation because it was getting to busy. Also added more rocks rising up from the blood pool below. Also made sure he was casting a shadow from the rim light.
10.) Last color correction pass. This time I corrected Jedah a bit to make sure he felt like he was physically in the scene. Another correction to the background to keep the color balance between the foreground and background fair. Fixed up small detail issues on the rocks, veins, and smoke behind him. Added Sig.
The End

The red glows are just as simple as using a bright red color and painting on top around the edges of the character's body. I will add that feature to the list of things to cover in my tutorials .

Wow!
Seeing this picture in steps lets me truly see the work you put into this!
The veins glowing red with blood, and the great lighting all really comes into light!

I'm curious. I'm trying my hardest to teach myself or learn how to do digital painting. Do you use layers on Photoshop while you're doing it?

Definitely . almost every step I listed in the process is either a new layer or several layers combined into one, like the smoke plumes.

I don't know much of Jedah, but all I can say is he's a really BAD@$$ character in Dark Stalkers.
