Vaad the cursed monk from my series STRIFE:

Backstory:

As a young warrior monk, Daishin and the brothers of his monastery were charged with guarding an ancient scroll that had once belonged to a dark sorcerer by the name of Vaad. One night the monastery became under attack from a mysterious group of fighters. The monks fought back but found themselves outnumbered and unprepared for their assailants modern weaponry and tactics. Daishin watched as one by one his brothers fell in defeat till he was one of the few defenders left to hold back the assault.

Daishin had heard about the immense power the dark scroll possessed but did not truly understand the depth of it's twisted nature and connection to these vicious foes. As the invaders began to close in Daishin decided his only hope was to use the scroll against the intruders. As he opened the scroll and viewed the contents Daishin felt unbelievable amounts of power coursing through him, so much energy that it caused him to collapse and black out.

When he awoke Daishin looked in horror as both the attackers and the few remaining monks who had been fighting were all dead, bodies bloody and broken strewn around the monastery. Not only that, but Daishin quickly realized all the wounds that he endured were completely healed. As Daishin gazed upon the devastation in front of him he heard a voice that seemed to come from inside his own head, "Thank you for freeing me monk, our souls and fate are as one, my name is Vaad and you belong to me!"
