Description sunset over over Poipu. Up on the rocks, some one was moved to fly with the angels. Someday someone has ta learn me ta use this camera. So many killer shots spoiled by noise

Killer sky, well captured

Is your camera set to take shots at the highest quality it can? Do you know what ISO is used when you took this? (Too high an ISO will give you noise on the result).

digitalwiz In reply to WelshWench [2007-09-21 18:02:38 +0000 UTC]

THanx

Oh yea I shoot in raw I think the ISO was 100 but it was on an auto settin so hard to be sure

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

WelshWench In reply to digitalwiz [2007-09-21 19:14:10 +0000 UTC]

I suppose it's possible that the camera changed the ISO cos of the low light, if it was on auto? But I wouldn't have thought it would have changed it enough to give much noise. Might be worth checking the EXIF data though, just in case?

Is the noise apparent as soon as you've processed the RAW file, or is it only in the jpegs?

Its shows up in the raw and gets worse as I tweek the settings

Bummer! The 30D is a terrific camera normally, is it worth getting a local shop to check it over for you?

Nice....are you using a tri-pod?

No, I need one. Know a good light but sturdy tri-pod?

kaiack In reply to digitalwiz [2007-09-20 21:28:30 +0000 UTC]

There are many different ones at various prices. I like Gitzo but they are expensive...mine was $500

Look at the Bogen / Manfrotto but don't buy the cheapest one out there....you won't be happy. You can find one with the head for about $150 - $200. You will see a difference in longer exposure images....get a shutter release as well. That will help too..

But don't get me wrong....I still liked your image.

Gitzo is that carbon fiber and a panoramic head?

Yea I have a collection of chepos

Thanx man I wish I could take credit. That sunset was from a higher plane

Gitzo tripods can also be purchased in carbon fiber.....dig deeper in your wallet for those....and you purchase the legs and head seperately. Choose the head best suited for your needs. I bought mine in 2002 and it's still in great shape. I have 3 different heads plus attachments for various types of shoots. Optech makes padded covers for the legs which will save your shoulders on long treks.

A cheap tripod usually stays at home

You may not have created the scene but you captured the moment.

You know, coming from Colorado and all, I'm used to these massive, craggy rocks jutting out over my head nearly all the time... so there's something rather unnerving about being able to see that far away into the horizon, on what appears to be a perfectly flat horizon... but this part of Colorado gets some of the most beautiful sunsets, and the colors remind me of those sunsets, and that seems to calm down the "OMG FLAT!" unnveringness... If that makes sense o.O hehehe

Ya know I've sailed to Antarctica a couple a times and as I stood on deck, surounded by water. I felt like I was home. I have been backpacking in the high country behind Yosemite. My family has always gone to the Sierras. The mountains there are so beautiful as to be undescribable. Yet I never felt like home there. I was born to go to sea. I miss being on the water, so I live near the beach. Its as close as I can get for now. So I guess I understand what yer sayin__yea

I'm not familiar with it, but I have been learning a lot about my own camera - so I understand! I have some photography education under my belt from years ago (film) and have been using the internet to teach myself the digital side. I have a noise reduction setting I just discovered thanks to an encouraging nudge from ~danceafterdark , and I've noticed an improvement in a lot of situations! I hope you can as well. You have such an ideal setting in which to shoot!

I hear you, I learn better by DOING myself, but with a camera as old as mine it was kinda tough to find an adviser in this state, lol.
