In my current job, I have gone into homes and talked to older people all over my state. Many people make choices that serve them poorly. One poor choice is to believe one has no choice, for example. Another is to blame others for their own choices. I think it is human nature to try to thrive, a survival instinct. To ignore the desire to thrive is the saddest choice of all.
And many cultures have learned to fear those with power. But that, too, is a choice.
