My friend says Gimp does have clipping masks... but I wouldn't know. I don't even have Gimp on my computer anymore xD

Well there is a simple solution for that... Get the base layer, and magic select it. (The base color layer)
Invert the selection.
Erase.
Then the shading doesn't go beyond the edges. ^^
