Description
When Handel was just a baby, her mother died near a human couple's summer home, still carrying her, and the humans found her. They decided to keep the little baby Dryad, and they raised her and became the only family she'd ever known. While she was left in their summer home, the couple died in a car accident. Young Handel was forgotten in the home, the couple never came back. The humans didn't really know anything about Dryads, so they weren't able to tell her how important it was that she go and find a tree to bond to and what the signs were that it was time. When the time came, she refused to leave the house, so in desperation, her body bonded to the roses just outside the house. The spell in her body has encouraged the growth of the roses until they completely overgrew the house.
Later, the other Dryads contacted her, but it was a while before she let them talk to her.

Your paintings... agh, so much talent! It's like rennaissance stuff, very Rembrandt here, and the other one where you did a portrait of her face.

This is absolutely gorgeous. The color palate really makes this piece for me, with the contrasting light, faded warm colors against rich, dark cool colors. It's just splendid. The story behind this really makes the piece. Poor girl.

Seeing your work and reading the descriptions reminds me of the wonder I felt when I was introduced to Chris Van Allsburg's 'The Mysteries of Harris Burdick.' You also have an amazing way of relating place and mood. And I think I prefer your surreal, organic characters to his more traditional ones. It's just more in line with the other influences I love (like Alphonse Mucha, Neil Gaiman, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, and Tim Burton). Thank you for sharing these dreamtime vignettes with us.

this is absolutely beautiful! <3
i love these dryads of yours; they're fascinating :0
what happens when they can't find a tree to bond to?
and how do they contact eachother?
do they all unconsciously use spells to influence plants??
i totally want to make one too someday ^-^

Thanks!
If there's not a single suitable tree or large enough plant to bond to anywhere around them, they get very sick and slowly die. In fact, Handel was quite ill for a long time, since the roses weren't quite big enough at first, but she managed to live through the rough patch while the roses grew.
They contact each other the same way people do. The Dryads that contacted Handel just went to the house and knocked on the doors and windows and yelled in at her.
They all have spells in their bodies to influence their bonded tree, mostly to encourage health, growth and healing to keep it in good shape. The spell is so strong it can have similar effects on other living things. Luz the surgeon actually uses the effect to help his patients heal faster.
