Description A Photo I snapped at the 2012 Fan Expo of a model of a giant Turtle, from an exhibit displaying miniatures and props from Tim Burton's upcoming stop-motion Disney movie "Frankenweenie". The giant turtle apparently appears near the end of the movie. He reminds me a lot of Gamera. The concept sketch even had giant lower tusks, but this model doesn't. Other models in the case include the "Bride of Frankenweenie" poodle, and a few of Victor's fellow students.

And the Asian kid basically creates Gamera. Monster movie homage, anyone?

Basically yes. Shelly was basically an homage to Gamera, and in a lesser sense, other giant Japanese monsters like Godzilla. Many other of the freak creations were homages to other Classic Movie monsters too, like The goldfish was the Invisible Man, Colossus was the Mummy, the rat was the Wolf Man, the Sea Monkeys were the Creature from the Black Lagoon and Mr. Whiskers was Dracula.

They really are. I didn't even think of the Black Lagoon though! Very good spotting on your part. I think this movie was more for the horror fans in that respect. There are so many homages to different classic monsters, and actors (Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Christopher Lee).

Well, it's just the most likely source the Sea Monkeys are supposed to be representing, and you normally see it among the other horror movies monsters, like Dracula, Frankenstein and the Mummy. It's Gamera and Godzilla who normally are not lumped in with the other classic horror monsters. Well that makes sense on the last part with the actors, I'm pretty sure Tim Burton has worked with 2 out of three of them. He quite regularly works with Christopher Lee, and Vincent Price narrated his first stop motion work, a short called Vincent about a boy named Vincent who idolized and mimicked Vincent Price. As for Boris Karloff, I might be mistaken, but I think he was portrayed in Ed Wood, but I might be confusing him with Bella Lugosi.

That's true. Monster movies like Godzilla and Gamera are usually separated from classic western monster movies. I loved Vincent (First saw it a year ago at the St. Louis Vincentennial celebration ) I really loved seeing just how much Tim Burton idolized Vincent Price, and how that influenced his work. Yep, it was Bela Lugosi. Karloff was still portrayed in many other works though. It's always great to know that these actors are still well-remembered.

For the most part, yes. Certainly Gamera is very seldom placed with the other classic American movie monsters, Godzilla, and to a bigger extent, King Kong, is sometimes clumped in with the other classic horror movies. Duck Tales once had a group of Horror movie monsters that included a giant gorilla that climbed Scrooges money bin, and Daffy Duck once had a nightmare after reading too many horror comics about him having to entertain a group of Classic Horror Movie monster parodies at a Night Club (in fear of violent retaliation if he failed to entertain them) that included a Godzilla parody named 'Claudzilla' as the biggest and meanest monster there that he feared the most, and who's ire finally scared him awake.

But yes, Vincent was a very nice film. I first saw it as special feature on a special edition Nightmare Before Christmas DVD. IT had the original live action Frankenweenie short on it too. Oh right, I figured it was more likely Lugosi than Karloff, I couldn't really remember since I never saw it, I just saw scenes about it.

Cool! I didn't know there was a turtle character in this movie. I might be more interested in watching it now. It didn't really grab me from the previews I saw of it.

Yeah, I didn't know either until I saw this exhibit. The first thing I thought was Gamera. It's foot is in the new Trailer, but you can't tell what it is.
I for on was very excited for this movie, I used to watch and love the original Frankenweenie live action 30 minute short made back in the '80s. My sister absolutely adored the original, and she says she'll be heartbroken if this new movie isn't good.
