Description
Oh dear! It looks like several monsters have invaded sector 1 and it looks like you'll have to deal with them as you hunt the area for upgrades. Just like in metroid, fighting these critters is technically optional but sometimes it'll be hard to get around them as they could be blocking your path. You can then chose to risk avoiding them or you can blast them all to pieces!ΒAs for this particular room, there's quite at lot of enemies present at this junction that would be hard to get around without fighting. The pink shelled ones are stationary until you jump near them, hoping to catch you off guard. The mushroom spiders simply walk around minding their own business.
Additionally, you can see some overgrown roots in the window which surprisingly took a load of time to carefully create. With each piece of art while I do reuse a lot of assets I also create brand new ones specific to each location. Here I made a bunch of patterns on the walls of the station that I think look ok. This whole piece isn't my best imo but I still like it.
What do you guys think of this? What would you like to see me make next?

I'll definitely consider it. The only issue would be that I'd be doing something I'm not too familiar with (I don't draw trees very often) and that could lead to a poor quality piece of work. But who knows? Maybe tomorrow I'll feel more confident and I'll give it a shot.Β

just look at is as some practice i'm sure you'd be great, and it's good to get out of your comfort zone once and awhile, even if the finished product isn't as great as your others^^ just a thought!

Since I've already made my next one, I'll wait until I've made yours and bundle it with the other new one I made. And yeah, I DO need to practice drawing other things.
Can I ask you a question? Why do you think games that take 5 years to develop end up selling less than 100 copies on steam? I've been reading a ton of stuff about indie gaming and it's pretty depressing and dream-killing.

ya know, I ask myself the same question sometimes, and I've come to the conclusion that not a lot of people recognize the manufacturer, the developer, or anything. most people like to stick with their good name branded products, and even if they didn't, that's literally most of what you see these days. if I asked a person off the street what's some of their favorite video games, they'll give you the big titles, like Mario, Pokemon, call of duty, mega man, final fantasy, Spore, Metroid, etc. they all link back to a large company, like Nintendo, Square Enix, game freak and more. if I asked that same person to tell me some of their favorite indie games, they'll either not know what you're talking about, not know any games, or might've forgotten.
it's only when an indie game catches someone's eye and starts getting popular, will people actually recognize it. take undertaleΒ for example. it's dream-killing and depressing, yes, but at the same time.. it kinda gives you motivation to try harder, right?

I'm going to be pretty annoyed if I make this entire game so metroid fans who complained about the lack of metroid games, finally get something to play, and then dismiss it as a lazy ripoff even though it was specifically designed for them in mind.
I'm worried that people don't want the gameplay, music, graphics, quality, etc... of metroid but merely the brand and characters. If that's the case, I'm screwed!

yeah, that would suck indeed
it just depends on how you deal with the situation you'd be an indie developer i assume, and metroid was created with many more developers. i hate to say it, but indie games aren't usually the better of the two when compared to games with a whole team behind it. that being said, indie developers sometimes get more rewards than games like metroid, halo, etc. since it can take a hell lot more effort!

Yeah I definitely have the odds stacked against me that's for sure. I'm not in a good position at all both with development and in real life (I'm overweight and I never leave the house). Despite this, I'm still willing to try because I don't know how else to satisfy my longing for a new metroid game that plays exactly how I want it to.

well, you know what they say, you want something done, do it yourself.
and even though you hafta deal with realΒ life, it's good you haven't given up on the idea of making a game. it's a good experience for everyone in my opinion, even if you don't make uch money, it's the experience you can build off of later

I guess I just care about making a good enough game in the end for my standards rather than making all the money in the world...but it's try I'd love to be rich and famous and respected. Then again wouldn't we all?
If I can just play another damn good, legendary metroid game, if I can eve produce such a thing, I'll be satisfied.

that's a good point^^ just be careful for what you wish for. there's some twisted people in the world, sadly
i know what you mean xD i'm trying to produce my own video game, believe it or not lol, but i'm too lazy to make the sprites.Β

I'd be interested to know what type of game you're making in general in addition to the story if possible.Β
I'll do what I can if I don't get too stressed out doing so. Hopefully it won't ever get that bad though so I'm not too worried.

well, i'm thinking of making a game that's like an adventure RPG,Β similar to the zenonia series (specifically the older games)? i had so much fun exploring the different areas, heh. it'll have a similar story to mario, as two kingdoms were against each other and the princess got stolen^^ it's basically something like the wolf kingdom [male monarchy] was tired of having to abide by the fox kingdom [female monarchy] 's rules, so the wolf king captured the fox queen :3 you can play as a fox, and other characters and species when you complete the game i'm thinking of calling it kitsune clash since the oslΒ only allows you to play as a fox. and when i say fox and wolf, i'm talking about fox/human, and wolf/human
sorry if it's a bit long
you have no idea how much i thank you for this.. i'd pay you if i could!

Well I should warn you that I'm terrible at drawing animals and humans since I'm bad at drawing natural stuff. The only reason I can get away with my protagonist (who I think is a human right now) is that the suit hides things like muscles and stuff.
But I'll give it a go at least if I feel up to it.

Out of curiosity, how much sprites would you like me to make? Previously I had the idea that it wasn't many but now I'm not sure. I just don't know how much I'll actually want to do in the future. Sorry about this btw.

Thanks. I wonder what gives my mock ups that nice contrast of colors people like? Do you think there's a science to it?

Alas--Arts In reply to Dinar87 [2016-12-10 19:55:01 +0000 UTC]
I've been trying really hard to figure that out myself. I've looked at a few videos on color theory, and honestly I don't quite get it. Although, I think in this particular case, I like the way the values of the two colors are really close. And maybe it has something to do with the contrast of high and low saturations. I do remember from those videos that it helps to have contrasts in saturation. *shrugs*

I guess it just has a certain "magic" to it then that can't be described. Let's hope I can replicate it for the future!
