ForI'm purty proud of this. ;n; And almost 1200 words aww yeah
~~~~~
Rabbit had only been in town for a few days before she'd managed to track down the mafia she'd heard so much about. She had never seen or met so many stray dogs in her life, and she wondered how on earth they managed to live in the city like this. The concrete beneath her paws was warm and comfortable to lay on in the day, but at night it sapped her warmth and made her ache for her family. She had to wonder what had become of them, if they'd all been taken by people like her and were suffering or-
The Capo Cane she was following, the leader of the Di Trieste, stopped when they came to an open street. The downtown part of the city was more run down and dirty than the rest, but people walked about in droves, visiting antique shops and cafes. The alleyways were dark and dank and unpaved. The dirt felt cool beneath the mixed breed's paws and helped her calm her thoughts and focus. Rabbit took a deep breath, and her stomach erupted in a growl when she caught the scent of grilling meat. She licked her lips and pinned her ears at the taste of grit and dirt that settled in her mouth, her coolness shattered and dropped. Her body felt hot and she was curious and ready to do something. The mafia hound scanned the crowd for a moment, unaware of her inner conflict or ignoring it, then glanced at Rabbit and motioned for her to come and stand beside him. She came forward uneasily, a spring in her step, and perked her ears to listen to his voice. She still struggled to understand his accent.
“Euhh. 'ere we are,” he began, licking his lips and pausing for dramatic effect. “Go an steal some zings. I will wait.” The brute eased to his haunches in the shadows. Rabbit watched him for a moment, then turned and walked out into the street. She raised her tail to curl over her back; she was confident and strong and she couldn't screw this up.
Since she'd came to the city, she'd learned the hard way to look for cars. A grim smile danced across her lips as she crossed the street, her tail wagging and her ears perked. The shift between angry stray and easy-going, lost pet was easy enough for the dog. A few people watched her when she entered their field of vision, but most of them ignored her dirty black and white fur and thin frame. She really wasn't sure where or how to begin, so she decided to just observe people for a bit. She sat in front of an antique shop, her tail still wagging casually. A few minutes passed and the warmth from the windows of the store and the concrete began to make the mongrel sleepy, her inner fire nothing but charcoal. She rose to her paws slowly, her brown eyes trained on an unsuspecting elderly couple.
Rabbit approached the people casually, her head low, her attention flickering between her targets and the concrete. They sat and chatted easily while they waited for the bus, the woman's purse resting on the ground. Without breaking her stride, the dog reached into the bag and grabbed the lady's wallet. She made a wide circle, keeping her prize tucked close to her chest, and returned to Vice. She set it at his paws and raced off to steal more. She was sure her father wouldn't approve of her taking advantage of people like this, but she chased the thought from her mind and began to look for other targets.
~~~~~
The dog had been stealing for nearly an hour when she spotted Vice moving from his hiding place in the shadows. She froze and her mind began to race as she wondered what she had done wrong, where she had screwed up. Had she been taking the wrong things? Had she not taken enough? Did she work too slowly? She quickly swallowed the hot dog she'd stolen from a man that had left it unattended while he'd gone to the restroom and licked her lips. Her body trembled slightly as she watched the Capo Cane cross the street at an easy trot and approach her. He bid her to follow him, and she followed numbly, mind still racing.
The two dogs walked down the street while the knot in Rabbit's stomach continued to grow. The Capo Cane approached a man that was staring in a store front and leaped into the air, shoving the man roughly into the glass. He pushed off the man's back and took off running down the street.
“Zees ees de next paart of de test!” he barked, leaving her standing on the sidewalk, stunned.
The man picked himself up and spun around, blood pouring from his nose. He lunged for Rabbit and she let out a squeal and raced out of his reach, heart pounding and panic pouring through her body.
“Someone catch that dog! It attacked me!” the man screamed, and all the people on the street froze and watched her run. She darted across the road, headed to where Vice had been waiting for her, and quickly changed direction when a man in a uniform with a catch pole exited the alley. When they'd arrived earlier in the day, a shop owner had called animal control, not wanting stray dogs milling about his business. In such a large city, it had taken until now for an officer to appear to take in the dogs.
“Shit shit shit.” Rabbit breathed, bolting under a truck in an attempt to hide. She panted heavily, eyes darting to and fro to find the animal control officer. The dog had only a moment to rest before the pole appeared and caught her around the neck. In one swift movement the man dragged her from under the truck and into the open.
High pitched screams and barks erupted from the dog's throat. Wailing like a banshee was a reflex of hers, but the catch pole had caught her right foreleg too and was digging into her skin. A crowd began to gather as the man allowed her to rise and back into a wall. She panted heavily and bared her teeth. The catch pole tightened around her neck and leg and her mouth fell open as another scream sprang from her throat. She snapped at the man as he attempted to help free her leg, and people began to complain at her rough treatment.
Summoning all her strength, Rabbit strained against the catch pole and continued to scream at the top of her lungs. Throwing her whole body up into a rear, the pole slipped from the man's hands and she took off in a three legged gallop. People scrambled to get out of her way as she barked and snarled and raised her hackles to look intimidating. It worked, and she managed to stop and lose the catch pole before high-tailing it back to the Di Trieste headquarters.
