Is it possible to do this with only basic crocheting skills? Or should I hold off until I am a little better?

I think a beginner could do this! It's just chaining and single crochet. The only tricky part is switching colors. The trickier part is changing colors when you are on the 'back', because you have to bring the strings back around so they don't hang down over the 'front'. The only time the pattern calls for this is on the sides where the grass is coming down over the dirt.
You can find many good tutorials on basic color changing online - 'how to change color in crochet' should get you what you need.
