Description
The Waira (Mononychotherium munios) is a large Mammal part of the Xenarthra family which consists Sloths, Anteaters, Armadillos, and of course Giant ground sloths. But unlike Their other Relatives they have Bizarre Structured Claws and Fingers, only two fingers on theΒ front paws are small and rendered "Useless" but their middle claws are Huge and curved possibly for digging up Grubs, insects, worms, and also Roots, Leaves and Tree bark but sometimes the Waira Known to eat small Mammals like Moles, Squirrels and Rabbits just to Supplement their protein for you see...... Giant Ground sloths are not just Vegetarians, they also feed on Meat as well...... Specifically Carcasses of dead animals, Plus the Claws are also used for defending themselves by slashing and clawing Predators that get to close and harm them. Speaking of Giant Ground sloths, the Waira is roughly the size of an Extinct Ground sloth Called Lestodon (an extinct genus of megafaunal ground sloth from South America during the Pliocene to Pleistocene periods. Its fossil remains have been found in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela, Bolivia, and Brazil.) and just like the Lestodon it is Adorned with big sharp canines on the upper and lower jaw possibly for defense. But despite their large size, Sharp canine teeth and vicious looking Sickle-like claws on their front paws, the Waira in Japanese folklore is said to be aΒ Benevolent, Harmless & peaceful Yokai that protect Shinto Shrines and they only attack if you don't pay respect to them and only feed on small Mammals and again if you don't pay respect to the Shinto shrines, they're eat your face LITERATLY. But in Real life when it was first seen, this animal has a Strange bond with Shinto Shrines.... often lingering around them and even sleeping there for comfort, no one knows why but it's theorized that they find it safe and secured from Predators and they only attack when needed for you see like in the myth the Waira is a Harmless Sloth and chooses to live peacefully rather then fight but that is nature. The most Notable thing about the Waira is not just their large size, teeth and claws, but their famous "Green Color" which is Actually Many years of Algae growing on their fur to give them their Green color which is Mostly used for camouflage in the forest, However their are rare accounts of a Brown Variant which is the result of having no Algae growing on their Fur. The Young Waira tend to stay the Mothers or Fathers by Clinging on to their backs until their old enough to care for themselves, in most mythical creature depictions we fear something we think is Dangerous but it's not but hey that's what makes us Human We fear because we love also this Yokai Shows that We can't judge a book by it's Cover, Especially when it's covered in Algae.Related content
