In the novel, the apatosauruses were actually brontosaurus. Dr. Wu said that they were "originally called brontosaurus...", stating that they're A. excelsus, which is now B. excelsus. For JW, I think its still B. excelsus too. Despite being called apatosaurus in the official website and the size of it is almost as large as the oklahoma apatosaur, I managed to reveal its species as A. excelsus, same as the apatosaurs in the novel, why ?
1. In most of JP franchise, they usually used the same species of dinosaur in books, movies, and games, with some of the dinosaurs which its species name were mentioned as an exception (the raptors in the novel and movie for example). So JW probably used the same species as the ones in the novel.
2. Idk exactly when did apatosaurus was planned to appear to the movie, but it takes many years (IIRC it was 10 years or so) to make JW before 2015, where brontosaurus genus is back. So apatosaurus was planned somewhere before that time and the producers had no idea that bronto will be valid again XD
3. Size doesn't matter. Oversizement are common in JP franchise. The apat... I mean bronto in the novel were 28 meters long, close to the oklahoma apatosaur's size. And according to the official website, the apatosaur in JW also have the same size too. But nah its not A. ajax. The stegosaurs from JP:TLW for example, they are still S. stenops even though it was highly oversized, thats why they called it S. stenops "gigas" in JP legacy.
4. Also, when I shared the apatosaurus info from the website to my facebook, the description in facebook said that "once misstakenly called brontosaurus...".
So there you go, I have no doubt that its actually brontosaurus excelsus in JW.

Plus, this scene in bullshit man. You can't solo a herd of 6 brontos with ease. With that neckhammer (#BRONTOSMASH ) and supersonic tail whip, the indominus would've like youtu.be/j7DVh9IPHqM . But anyways, love the pic I like how you drew their expression.

Why do I get the feeling that this reminds me of the death of Littlefoot's mother?

Because she's Apatosaurus.

It was Apatosaurus that dinosaur. Though it was interesting that in the recently posted storyboards originally there was supposed to be Brachiosaurus and (My favorite sauropod growing up) Diplodocus. Though obviously they added that dinosaur because this dino was in the novel.

Your right, it was thought to be feature Brachiosaurus in this film since the first Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park 3, but sadly it was replaced by Apatosaurus, dang!

Again they are probably giving tribute to the novel by Michael Crichton.
