Description

"It changes!" is one of two possible options for the second boss fight in story mode. The stage includes no regular fights and is solely the player versus the boss, Oobloth the Indescribable.

At the start of the fight, Oobloth will approach the player in a simple, blob-like form which only rarely attacks. It should be noted that the metal pod he emerged from can be picked up and used as an indestructible weapon, but will not actually be needed until later in the fight. For this first encounter, Oobloth primarily follows the player around, more interested in watching than doing any damage. He will attack if the player stays close to him for too long, but only has a slow and basic set of combos. If the player deals a significant amount of damage to him he will melt and slither away, reforming himself somewhere else. After doing this three times, a cutscene will showing Oobloth changing his body and morphing into a clone of the player's monster.

In this stage of the fight, Oobloth will fight identically to whatever character he's copied and can use all of their abilities. He does not inherit their elemental strengths and weaknesses, as he has none himself. After taking enough damage (roughly half of a normal monster's health bar), he will melt and reform again, this time changing into a different monster. Which monster he becomes will be random, but he can only copy the original ten characters. Once defeated, he will melt and reform again, becoming either a different one of the ten, or the player's monster again. Melting him a third time prompts another cutscene, showing Oobloth struggling to maintain a solid form. His body mutates out of control, twisting him into a hideous, overgrown hybrid of the original monsters.

This marks the beginning of the real fight, Oobloth's "abomination" form. He follows a simple pattern, alternating between chasing the player around the map and avoiding them to launch long range projectiles. He can be harmed in either phase, with any kind of attack, but the player needs to watch his behavior and strike at specific moments if they want to deal any significant damage. Otherwise they could be locked in a war of attrition for quite some time, and in matters of endurance, Oobloth holds the advantage.

During the chasing phase, Oobloth follows the player around the map attempting to use melee attacks. He is a slow and clumsy creature, easy to avoid even for the game's slowest characters, but his giant size gives him a long reach and intimidating attack power; players would be wise not to get too cocky, as their health can quickly become decimated if he corners them. Like Goliath Prime from the first game, he can also pick monsters up and pummel them for extra damage. Trying to fight back is not recommended, but if it must be done, throwing objects is the safest way.

After a few seconds of chasing have passed, Oobloth will roar and jump a short distance away, starting the long range phase. During this part of the fight he will spit small homing projectiles continuously, whittling away at the player's health. It presents less immediate damage, but is the more troublesome phase in the long run. It's also the best time for the player to go on the offensive, since they can throw debris and use basic ranged without fear. As previously mentioned, this is more useful for chipping away at his health than dealing major damage.

The crucial moment is the end of the long range phase, when Oobloth will top off his barrage with a special attack. There are five different attacks which he can perform at random (each combining the powers of two of the WOTM1 monsters), but all have a visual tell and can be interrupted with a properly timed attack; this is the real way to do damage to him. His attacks and tells are as follows...

Slobber Scream (Preytor + Congar). Predicted by Oobloth drooling, punching the ground, and inhaling. He unleashes a scaled up version of Congar's sonic roar, flecked with toxic slobber akin to Preytor's spit. It has medium range, a wide area of effect, and deals a massive amount of damage. It also leaves a smear of poisonous spit on the ground which will linger for a few seconds and harm monsters that walk over it. If the player throws Oobloth's pod at him as he inhales, the attack will fail and he will take a large amount of damage, staggering back and taking a few seconds to catch his breath.

Charge Blades (Kineticlops + Togera). Oobloth crosses his arms and shudders before dramatically flexing and roaring, bone spikes extending all over his body. This combo is technically a buff, not an attack, and makes his melee attacks in the chase phase even deadlier than normal, using electrified spines to shock the player. If they throw Oobloth's pod while he roars, the impact will knock him over and break his spikes, dealing a large amount of damage and canceling the buff. Alternatively, if they fail to interrupt the attack they can use the pod to block his attacks without being shocked (though this does not prevent him simply grabbing them).

Hellfire (Raptros + Magmo). Oobloth shakes his head and closes his mouth as flames seep out. When his mouth opens, a barrage of fireballs flies out and rains down on the ground. Does less damage than the Slobber Scream, but has a very long range. Since the projectiles scatter they also have a wide area of effect, and each one causes a small explosion that can set the player on fire. If they throw Oobloth's pod as he's charging it up, the fireballs will explode in his mouth, dealing a large amount of damage and canceling the attack.

Wrecking Ball (Agamo + Ultra-V). Oobloth wiggles his antennae and aims his fist, which slowly swells to a tremendous size. The fist launches off straight ahead, then pulls itself back in on a cord of flesh. This is the easiest attack to avoid, but also the most powerful. Its reach is surprisingly far and it can easily destroy multiple buildings in a single blow. If the player picks up Oobloth's pod and blocks with it, the punch will bounce back and hit him in the face, dealing a large amount of damage.

Tri Beams (Robo-47 + Zorgulon). Oobloth's eyes move inward, closer together, and begin to spin around in a circle gradually picking up speed. At full tilt, they begin firing off lasers like a machine gun, inundating the player with small, fast moving projectiles. This is the weakest of the attacks, but also lasts the longest and can thus gradually sap huge amounts of health. The player can either cancel it by throwing Oobloth's pod at him while his eyes start spinning, or allow him to charge up and use the pod to block, reflecting the barrage back at him.

After doing this enough (he'll cycle between chase, shoot, and special multiple times), Oobloth will fall and a cinematic will show him losing control and degenerating into a shrieking pile of mish-mashed bodyparts. He makes one final attempt at replicating the player's monster, but fails and melts into a featureless pile of goo, leaving the victor to roar.

The silver color was inspired by the T-1000.

I really like this! Though one thing, I'd probably have him be doing light attacks more often in his first phase. Like have them be little suction pods or proboscis like. need to make it clear to the player the boss has some agency in this phase too and isn't there to kill the pace.

I really like this concept, the whole shapeshifter idea is really cool IMO. I can see the arena being destroyed and changing constantly because of his changing form.

I love the concept! I'd imagine the music being very disheveled to represent his constant changing form.
