"So...uh... my first scientific catalog of a new animal... hi... AHEM! So, this is an interesting creature was found near my home colony of Yadaka, a small farming community on the outskirts of the forests. Dr. Tyler Lewlen had been called over to investigate the mystery animal that had been tearing up the lantern fruit crops. They laid nets all along the tree line and put what ever they caught in a little carrying case. I know this because Dr. Lewlen came to my office, told me he was to busy to research it, and that he'd give me full credit for it's discovery, and left. Flattering to say the least.
Anyway, this bat-like creature is an oddball; this appears to be a strange four toed that evolved powered flight. The wings structure is bat-like at a glance, but close inspection will tell you it's built like an eagle or falcon in truth. It's long face reminds me of a fruit bat... a horned fruit bat. I was confused at first as, for an herbivore, it seemed to have a vicious set of teeth. I know this because every time I tried to get close to it, it bore them at me and I'm pretty sure it bite my pinkie toe when I was sleeping. Frustratingly, it pretty much wanted nothing to do with me but it seemed to want everything to do with what I ate. I've lost a week's harvest worth of food to this guy, though pests have diminished so that explains the sharp teeth. But this thing LOVES candle fruit; I'd ready a plate turn around, look back, and it's gone.
It has a long tail with structures extending outward that give it the eagle tail, fan shape. This is for control, obviously. With controlled observation, I found this creature to be far more maneuverable than a bat and its monkey-like feet made it much better at hanging upside down from branches.
Further adding to this creature's strangeness, is that while anatomically it's pretty much an eagle or a bat, it appears to possess primate levels of intelligence. Every move I made, he looked upon with intrigue and curiosity. He almost seemed to be studying me just as much I was him. After a month of research, a thought creeped into my head; "I need to train this thing!"
Immediately I began attempting to get him comfortable around me; he was content but didn't like getting too close. I began to tempt him with candle fruit as a reward. It took a week to get him to trust me, but I did it. After that, I found that despite having an intelligence comparable to a chimpanzee, his temperament was not unlike that of a dog; just as easily trainable and loyal, with a wider range of skill sets than a canine. After I earned his trust, he began to follow me around and accelerated in training. I had him catching small animals within a half a mouth. With our bonding he needed a name; I thought Kōmori was good. When Dr. Lewlen returned I had not only exceeded his expectations, he had to sit and process this new wealth of information. How's that for a first discovery?!"-
