finally felt compelled to pin down rún's original form! Its-Sathem 's gorgeous rún drawings were really inspiring to finally make me do it haha.I actually spent quite a bit researching for this one! I looked at common rune inscriptions from the era of this art style and then made my own based on that, referencing the actual grammar of the time. then I of course designed the dragon carving looking at the urnes style ... and promptly ruined the historical accuracy by using the wrong futhark hahaha. the elder futhark was not in use at the time of this style runestone at all, but damn it, it's my favourite one and the younger futhark comes in so many variants so I gave myself the easy out after all that. (plus the runes I typically draw on rún are in that alphabet even though it's anachronistic cause again it's my favourite so like. some consistency despite the anachronism, why not!)
the runes, transcribed: Inga ok Stceinn letu rœisa stæin þenna œftÍR AuðgœÍR, faður sinn, ok OfœigR, hroður sinn. Guö hialpi and pæÍRa.
in modern swedish: Inga och Sten läto resa denna sten efter Ödger, sin fader, och efter Ofeg, sin broder. Gud hjälpe deras ande.
translated to english: Inga and Sten let raise this stone after Ödger, their father, and after Ofeg, their brother. God help their spirits.
christianity was competing with the norse gods at the time of the urnes style (~1050-1125), so some runestones had christian imagery and references to god, which I think is pretty fun. like, runestones and runes is one of the most inherently pagan things, but then oh hey psych there's god. as a really fun fact, the oldest church bell we have in sweden is from the 1200s and it actually has runes engraved!
while outwardly christian, a lot of people kept secret little altars for the norse gods and used runes for magic well past christianity's official take-over, and if I remember correctly runes scratched into bones and wood were in use in some areas as late as the 1400s. a particular subset of the futhark is the dalecarlian runes, and they were used as late as the early 1900s in dalarna, which is in mid-sweden! super super neat. they look pretty similar to the younger futhark too, so they didn't change much, which is even neater.
anyway, that little history lesson aside, my boy rún is essentially the runestone dragon here come to life. (: U-1182 is the designation of this (fictional, obviously) runestone, which stands for Uppland-1182 where Uppland is the area of the country with the most runestones (and also where the capital is) and 1182 is the ... 1182nd runestone in the area haha. the real list stops at U-1181. there's 2 881 runestones in sweden, and I imagine in this story there used to be 2 882, but this one vanished mysteriously ....!! I want to write a fake newspaper article about it sometime.
