Description Short description:

This is my attempt at making realistic nebulae. It's my overall 3rd attempt at painting any kind of nebula, and i found the technique while experimenting with some pictures of clouds that i had. Then it carried itself out from there. Took me about 3 days. I couldve had done a lot better if i spent more time on it, but i have other things pulling my attention, and i decided to finish this while i still had the enthusiasm.

Long Description:

While flopping around in photoshop playing with some pictures, i ended up with something that looked similar to a nebula. Then i gave it some brush loving and came up with the entire left section of this wallpaper. Then i decided to finish it. This work turned out to be both realistic and artistic at the same time. Artistic because of its composition, and realistic because of scale, and coloration.

Since i love to teach people about these things so that they get a better idea, the whole thing is basically hydrogen and dust. The edges of the clouds are lit because of ultraviolet light that hits them, so they give off a glow. Hydrogen is green-ish and thats why this has an overall green look. The warmer tones (yellow and orange) are due to the dust and light from massive stars) I used 3 tones of colors, as you can see: green, yellow, and orange (3 consecutive colors in the color pallete). The entire thing is aproximately about 50 light-years in lenght, meaning that if you had a space ship that could travel at the speed of light, it would take you 50 years at that speed to get from one extreme to the other.

Scale is also why there are no visible planets in this. Having any visible planet would disasterously ruin the scale and thus the "realistic" feel that this has. A starfield would also ruin it, since the light would block them out (after all, you dont see stars during broad daylight now do you?) Another thing that "would've" looked nice are bigger stars, but that ruins the scale as well.

Overall im really happy with the results of this graphic "accident" and i'm possitive that i will work on perfecting this technique later on.

Thank you for taking the time to check it out and most of all, to read the description. I hope you enjoy this

Ah yes, a well-known photo of Hydrogena, extragalactic origin of trans fats.

Kidding. Nice work!

i really like the use of color in this, i do have a question for you also, possibly (due to sooo many comments heh) could you reply back and tell me if you also took the photograph of...i think it was a nebula in the sky, i could be totally wrong though, i liked the shot, it was outside on a hill...mightve not been you though

dinyctis In reply to deadwake [2004-06-18 00:18:05 +0000 UTC]

you mean this one?

i used it to learn the coloration, lightning, and structure. Somebody else mightve just added it to a sky over a hill.

I painted all of it from scratch.

All I can say is that I had to full view this to get rid of that feeling that I've seen this before somewhere in an astronomical pictures gallery... Don't take this as an accusation but as due praise for such a good work.

It's a favourite!

it reminds you of the eagle nebula, which i used to lean about general structure and color of nebulae like these

And I even got enough inspiration to make a shabby attempt at something similar that I'm going to post right away.

oh i love it... excellent job on the realism..

and i would say that without reading the long description.. but that was good reading non the less

what i loved most was the brilliant use of colors and the texturised feel on the nebula edges

..i'm gonna check how it looks as a wally

cheers

Very nice results. And always nice to bump into someone who appreciates the esthetics of astronomical objects. (my Messier catalog is quite dog-eared) I've always had problems trying to paint nebulae. They're not even passable. I have to go play with my clouds filter!

Awesome looking...

If I may suggest tho, the light transition between the inside and outside is a bit too quick, it makes it look like it's popped out there or something, like a harsh edge, and the whole thing loses some 3d-ness. Maybe if you smudged (or something, whatever, I don't know photoshop tools) the edges a bit to soften the transition, on both sides of the light outline.

It IS excellent looking, I'm usin it as a desktop right now That's just a nitpicky thing I do, and you don't like things like "OMFG that's great"

Beautiful, well informed work. It has a wonderful wound or maw-like quality... like an animal intelligence to space, which is counter tradition; we're always trying to erase the animal from divinity.

There are two things that are very striking about this image. The first is that it invokes images of the Hubble pictures of the Eagle Nebula. Realistic?...yes, for the creation is close enough to some of the images of what are shown...and as I said, this reminds me very much of the Eagle Nebula. Second, I have another way of looking at this image. At times I perceive of myself standing at the bottom of an oceanic rift looking up to see the stars breaking through the surface of the water.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dinyctis In reply to C-Novack [2004-03-10 18:28:33 +0000 UTC]

that shows that i did a good job, because i used the eagle nebula as reference to study the glows, colors, and forms

that's nuts man, even so it should be a little different if you were trying to make it look like a nebula, it's closest to a dark nebula right now but it's still sweet

you're probably thinking of a planetary nebula if you think it needs to be brighter.

That's pretty awesome man. I really like how it appears to be tearing a hole in the canvas. Even though you know it's nebula, it kind of makes you think that it could be something more. The lighting through out the piece is my favourite part. The sparkles of light are very well done. Nice work.
