Description
I want to believe that the superman that was created as a sort of inspiration to the world, the character that became an icon representing good in all itβs forms- loving and accepting of humanity with all itβs flaws and shortcomings- will come back to us someday.Related content

There's some hope for Superman. All Star Superman is pretty good if you ever read that. The newest Man of Steel trailer seems to capture some of the magic that made me love the character as a kid. I hate was DC is doing with him in his ongoing though, I enjoyed the beginning of action comics but even that fell off.

I'd say that Morrison's current Action Comics still has those qualities. Hell, even Scott Lobdell's run's definitely got a bit of that going for it (I know, I know, it's surprisingly good).
Awesome drawing, though.

i guess morrison's action comics is just too all over the place to even be able to enjoy that way. it makes no sense, sequentialy. I constantly have no idea what is going on in it. I haven't read lobdell's run, but sadly they're both in that new52 context that makes it impossible to enjoy at all.
thanks though! I'm honestly just growing out of superhero books in general, so my opinions may be slightly more critical of the big two.

I never felt it "made no sense," but then I've always been weird in understanding even the most off-the-wall shit Morrison's written, even things like Final Crisis. I thought the overall story was kind-of losing steam/distracted for a little while, but homeboy somehow got it all to click together in one issue.
And personally, I think Superman in particular really improved with the New 52. For a while there he got really wangsty, dull, and kinda wimpy, but now he feels very passionate and vibrant again.
I get what you mean though--personally, I kind-of doubt I'll ever grow out of superheroes.

Great picture man!
Superman's funny in the sense that his comics have probably been his weakest medium for at least the last 20 years (excluding AllStar Superman). I have deep affection for the character but his monthlies are generally just all kinds of terrible.

that is exactly my opinion. I think I've just realized that All-Star spoiled me. It was the perfect superman story and now all i can see in other superman comics is how stupid they are in comparison.

Gorgeous colour and brilliant pose. I also love that his costume looks like material, and not just spray paint on a mannequin.

thanks so much! one of the few things i really enjoy doing as making costumes look like they can actually be worn.
i actually took a couple of cues from your own warm palettes for this one!

I could just not read any of it. Though I must admit that I did read ONE Superman book where he stumbles onto a basketball court and beats a bunch of black kids at B-ball. Needless to say the racism was enough to warrant me never to read another piece of Superman filth ever again.

wow I know which issue you're talking about and you literally read what is widely considered to be one of the worst superman comics of recent memory.
You literally picked up a random issue and it was the one worst/written/drawn/recieved issue ever. Especially by people who love superman.
I'm not kidding when i tell you to read All-Star. anyway, feel however you have to to feel good about yourself.

I feel pretty good not supporting a franchise that would green-light something so blatantly terrible. I also have no interest digging through mountains of garbage and continuities to find that "one good run". If a series is bad as-a-whole the series is bad, in my opinion.
I'm much happier giving what little money I have to new artists and new ideas. Original content and stories by all means over ones that are sold via headlines like Superman or Spider-man. I've turned my back on the old-boys club. If more people did the same I think comics would be in a much better place.

I always forget that you're diametrically opposed to enjoying anything from the big two, and it's always a shame for the few good books out there that're trying to elevate the genre.

hah. yeah i was always his poor imitation.
and I've read the article before, when it first came out a week or so back, and it's chalk full of legitimate valid criticism of the industry, but it doesn't invalidate absolutely every single piece of work that has been created by marvel or DC. You could make the same argument for every single publisher and be forced to boycott the comics industry completely for being racist (which we've both sort of agreed that historically, it has been.)
I really don't think there's a race divide over whether All-Star Superman (which is what i've been talking about this whole time)is or is not an amazing interpretation of the superman mythos.
It's two completely separate discussions.

theCEOofDEATH In reply to dio-03 [2013-02-11 17:51:41 +0000 UTC]
Superman is a franchise symbol. Selling stories under that franchise holds some weight to it. There have been re-envisioning of many mythologies and its a given that some would be better than others. The point here is, for me at the very least, is this. Why Superman? Would those stories be as compelling if they're were unattached to Superman? If so, why attach them?
I am against the symbol. I'm against the franchise. I'm against the machinations of the system as a whole. It all feeds into itself. I propose that it's not a separate discussion and instead is one that we need to marry to all discussions of comics and the "industry".
As young marginalized comic writers and artists, it should be in the forefront of all our discussions and all of our actions. What's that stupid quote, be the change you want to see in the world, or whatever. What happened in the past happened. What are we doing to make that better today?
I'm sorry but things like superman are both past and present. By supporting it's past in any capacity, now, funds the terrible things moving forward.
