I think you are off to a great start with the pastels. Much better than the first pastel I attempted. Excellent blending in the background. Very well done.
I think just experimenting with them on different type papers and blending tools till you find what works best for you is the best way to get better in this particular medium. I think you will find they are one of the easiest mediums to work in as far as blending colors. Detail work is a bit harder as they are so soft a medium. I found conte sticks or the harder pastel sticks (like nu-pastel sticks work well for adding details (especially fur in animals.)
I've found using sanded art paper works well for mixing pastels with colored pencils. The colored pencils take on some of the properties of the pastel pencils on this type paper and you can add extra details with them if you use a clay based colored pencils. Wax base will work also if you don't layer to heavily. From what I see in this drawing I think you have found a medium that you are going to really excel at with more practice.

Not bad for a first attempt! Shading looks good. Only thing to really work on is getting more even coverage, but that comes with practice
