Description
The wolf called Shadow lay in a field, surrounded by darkness. The trials of his life, this never-ending journey had taken its' toll on him...Claimed by exhaustion, he'd collapsed. Lying there, alone in the field, he felt the life draining from him. The dry, dead grass of late fall crackled in the stiff breeze. Even the chill air seemed determined to sap his waning strength. Closing his eyes for a moment, he tried to gather his energy to continue, but could not, feeling only despair.
There is no hope.
His tortured spirit was giving way to the desolation pervading his thoughts. Doubt wracked his mind, what was the point in going on? Why keep up this fight? He lay there, the silence only disturbed by the rustling of the taller grasses, the wind slowing as a thick fog rose. The choking white enveloped his world, shrouding it in an ethereal blanket of unbroken walls. He never knew how long he lay there, shivering and forsaken by all he had once trusted in, the darkness of night wreathing the eerie fog before it happened. He became slowly aware of another presence, watching, silently. At first, his hopelessness still weighing on him like a burial shroud, he lay still, waiting, perhaps anticipating it to come and finish him. But no attack came. Curious, and his spirit starting to spark within him, he turned his head, mustering the energy to at least look and see. There was nothing there. No, wait...an outline of a white wolf...fur bright and glistening, but so insubstantial as to be made of the mist itself. He knew somehow that this wolf was female...The wise glimmer in the glowing, golden eyes and delicacy of her form and limbs told him so.She simmered before him, but said nothing. She was sitting, just a few yards away. He lifted himself onto his forepaws, struggling to his feet. She watched impassively. Then, an emotion crept onto her fair features. Not pity, but sympathy. She reached out to him, a transparent paw stretched to him. It passed through his. He knew he could not help her, but the expression on her face urged him on. Gritting his teeth, he managed to stand to face her. The pride on her face warmed him, giving him the courage to keep from falling again. A soft breeze swirled up, pushing the oppressive for back to make way for an early morning mist. Aris' legs trembled, but he steeled himself, determined not to fall with the other wolf so near. She smiled sadly at him, the nudged his shoulder with her muzzle, somehow partially solid, but not quite like she was really there.

She didn't speak, but her eyes told him, and they shone with truth. Ari sat next to her, following her clear gaze to the horizon. A bright ray of light broke through the dark clouds, a ray of hope regained in the shadowed valley of his soul. A smile played across his face, peaceful at last. He turned to the other wolf, but she was gone...He wondered for a moment if she had even been real, but knowing how she'd given him the strength to continue, the hope for life convinced him that she had been there, he hadn't been dreaming. For how could his darkened thoughts conjured such a specter of light? No, she had been there, and she had helped him. Knowing this warmed Ari, that another creature cared for him. He smiled again, able to feel happiness and peace in that knowledge, thought the sorrow of her sudden parting. He hadn't been able to properly thank her, perhaps he never would...but remembering those clear, golden eyes, he somehow knew that she knew. Ari sat still and watched the dawn, having found his solace at last.

Inspired by a very dear friend of mine.
For the sky seen in the background, I used techniques that can be found in s incredible tutorial. I still did it all from scratch, but that tutorial helped a lot. I used my own brushes for everything.

EDIT: Quick change to the background, the first attempt was pretty sloppy. I think this ones' a bit better
