Description
Like most of my work, this cover design was initially drawn in pencil, inked using a dipped nib pen, and colored in Photoshop. I chose the imagery of the main character of the series trapped in an alleyway with the ambiguous shadow of a beast to not only literally depict the conflicts of the story, but to also reflect its underlying themes.You can read the comic at: www.paradigmshiftmanga.com

I don't know what it is about the shadow of the beast being reflected that intrigues me. Who knows.
Either way, this piece is simply outstanding and it is rare I'm convinced to comment on work I actually favorite. The lighting and expression also gives an amazing effect; you can feel the character's emotions and can only imagine what is on the other side.
What fascinates me most about this picture is how many different ways you can interpret it if you do not know the story behind it. When I first looked at it, it seemed as though the character shown herw was the werewolf. Looking again, could it be someone else?
That is one thing about art I could never capture. All of the different ways someone could look at it... but I digress. Amazing work, that DD was truly deserved.

Is she cornered by a werewolf or is the shadow foreshadowing that she's going to turn into her werewolf form to eat a potential mugger/rapist/killer?

I think I got this image on the front of a card a few years back at Comickaze (spelling?) in somerville. It's striking I like it.

I don't know if you remember me but I was at ACEN '08 and bought some books off of you.
Seeing someone original really inspired me to try for artist alley myself. Currently I'm working on some art for ACEN '10.
I hope to decide to go, I'd look forward to boothing next to you or something (if that's allowed).

Hold on a second...Kate has two shadows in this picture.

She sure does. It's because she has an animal within her. Whenever she is in danger or mad some of the beast traits become visible, such as pointed ears, fingernails becoming more like claws, an enraged animal look in her eyes and larger canine teeth. She shows the personality of an animal too.
So with that out of the way, how would you like to face off against an animalistic Kate that will jump on you in a heartbeat.

What I mean is that Kate isn't entirely human. For Kate getting mad is easy considering she has a fiery temper. When this happens something inside her takes over and she starts acting more like an animal than a person. If you have read the comic you know what I mean.

Just CS(1) at the moment. I'm not really using anything fancy, just some basic layering techniques. Flat base colors on the bottom, then a 'Multiply' layer with consistant tones (in this case, grey-blues of various values), and then a highlight layer set to 'Screen' to pop in some of the lighter areas. The overall effect allows me to simulate the effects of light onto the surfaces of the objects. You could do all the same stuff in PS v. 3 if you wanted to back in the day.

Very, very cool (also, congrats on the DD!) but, erm, I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but it kinda looks like she has two left hands (sorry, I shouldn't criticize). But VERY well done!!!

Other than the right hand, which looks a little backwards, this is terrific. I really like the shading and simple scheme, and the suspense is really evident. Congrats on the Daily Deviation!
