Description
Summer SunsetShades of warm crimson lit the clear cloud-free sky as the sun set, signaling the end of another long summer day. In the small, quiet town, two friends sat on a wall eating ice cream together, watching the last rays of sunlight disappear for the night. It was the last day of the summer holidays, and they were savoring every minute of it. They ate in a comfortable silence, just enjoying each other's company before they would inevitably have to return to their home towns and go back to school.
The small blond finished his ice cream and paused, gazing out at the horizon.
"Do you think we'll always be like this?" he asked quietly, turning to look at the other.
"Huh? What do you mean?" replied the red-head, glancing down at the smaller of the two and tilting his head in confusion.
The younger twirled his wooden ice cream stick in his hands, staying silent for a few moments.
"Well, you know, just this," remarked the blond, gesturing to the two of them. "Us hanging out, eating ice cream, just being together". He continued to watch the red-head, waiting for an answer. Said boy exhaled deeply, looking back out at the slowly disappearing sun.
"I suppose so", he answered, a small smile forming on his lips, "But why do you ask?".
The blond stayed silent, contemplating, before speaking.
"I'm not quite sure, but I sometimes just wonder. You're my best friend, y'know" he said, glancing at the eldest, "And I never want to lose that."
The red-head turned away from the barely visible sunset to stare into ocean-blue eyes. Silence ensued for what seemed like an eternity, before he spoke softly.
"We'll always be friends, even if we live far apart. And best friends are willing to deal with complications."
The young blond smiled softly, gazing up at the dark night sky which was gradually filling with stars. A warm sea breeze tousled his unruly hair, and he momentarily closed his eyes and sighed in bliss. The red-head smiled as he watched the youngest and then mimicked him, closing his eyes to feel the summer breeze caressing his skin.
"This is how it should always be," whispered the blond.
"Yeah."
