Description
Three days later, the primary sketch is complete. Or as good as it's going to get. I've been obsessed with with this scene from 13 Assassins so I decided to give it a go: [link] I suppose I should state that I did not do ANY drawing on top of the photo. No cheating here! Just old school hand-eye coordination.I'm just happy I captured the essence and desperation of their stance well enough and the mechanical detail of the background. I wish I could render the muddy ground, but I have no idea how I would do that without color. And oh yes, there is going to be color.
Phase 1 complete.
NOTE: Best view-able at the 1280 pixel width shown above, but I made the original high res file available.

Thanks, I'm honored, kind sir. However this is just a warm-up exercise. My real test will be when I create my own world. I hope I can deliver!

Thanks for the compliments and favorites everyone, it is appreciated!
A bit more info on this piece: I started drawing in Painter 11 with a Wacom Bamboo Pen and Craft tablet, but switched back and forth with a Logitech MX 518 mouse (which is without a doubt the greatest computer mouse ever made) as I added layers of detail and strengthened the lines. I spent the most amount of time working on the characters' stance, facial expressions and particularly the clothing, as the folds are quite complex and key to the motion and capturing their stances. Honestly, it was a pain in the arse to get right, and I'm still not completely happy with the way the folds look, but you gotta call it a day at some point, right? The background came along surprisingly easy, considering its complexity. I like the way the dark parts came out. It makes an interesting visual focus. Draws the eye in, all most as if you want to avoid viewing the desperate, bloody struggle in the foreground.
