Description The history of this dev continues...This is a revised and updated version (with my new camera) with much greater sharpness and clarity. I also like the angle of the fence more. The primary purpose of this resubmit is for the =crikey group. I liked the idea behind the previous version but didn't think the technical aspects of it were up to scratch.

For the unfamiliar, read the following lines from the little-known and rarely-recited second verse to Australia's national anthem:

For those who've come across the seas
We've boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To advance Australia fair.

These words sure come back to haunt the current farce of locking up people who escaped to this country for 4-5 years in a spartan facility in the Australian desert, if they're lucky. Others get locked on a rock in the Pacific called Nauru. Ever notice how John Howard's 'Pacific Solution' sounds kind of like Hitler's 'Final Solution'. A whacky coincidence, I'm sure. Howard is a child of Satan. There, I said it.

I never would have thought of that. I like how people can interpret your stuff in ways you never would have considered.

The original dev is about 2 months old, but your post certainly re-invigorated my desire to repost it for the club.

glad to be able to "re-invigorate your desire"

i just think its rather silly that theres a big push for national/patriotism (dont know which is more applicable) and we still lock people up that try to come here.

Nationalism and jingoism are nearly the same thing, and patriotism is a very misunderstood term that's usually confused for the former two.

which is what i was getting at. i get confuzzled due to the misuse of them all

disgracian In reply to Pyrexea [2005-09-10 15:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Nationalims can mean a couple of things, chiefly: 1) a movement of independence in a country under foreign military or colonial occupation; 2) an idea that nations should act independently of each other to acheive their goals; or 3) a belief in the superiority of culture/interests over other nations.

Patriotism is one who loves and defends their countries from enemies both within and without. Contrary to popular misconception is not an apologist for crooked governments, nor will a patriot side reflexively and unthinkingly with the official story.

Jingoism overlaps into the third definition of nationalism a bit, and is commonly mistaken for patriotism. It is perhaps best summed up by Albert Einstein's quote: "He who gleefully marches in rank and file has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by mistaken, when a spinal cord would suffice."

Yeah, it is. Not much we can do about it either, the Liberals will win again and the trend will continue because most of the population are more worried about interest rates than human rights.

yeap, money makes the world go round. and money is really all that matters to the people with power. and unfortunately, the people with power, are the ones who pretty much always win... i say, we start a rebellion!

webworm In reply to disgracian [2005-09-09 15:23:29 +0000 UTC]

It's a ArtHouse movey. I like those moveys! Its about white Australians taking away the children of native Australians to re-educate them. They did this until not to long ago! This movey is telling the story of children who fled away back home. They are following the rabbit-proof fences. Its a moving picture. Especially because its history (I'm glad they dont do this to the Aboriginals anymore).

I would like to hear your reaction on this movey when you've seen it!!! Cause you're Australian and I bet you know more about this subject! For me its so far away and we dont hear so much about Australian politics in Holland (yes, we hear about the beautiful nature etc).

disgracian In reply to webworm [2005-09-11 03:23:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm not sure if I know much more about the subject than anyone else, though like every other Australian citizen I've sure been fed a lot of propaganda about it. My better half (who is also on DA and whose work is better than mine: =cdaile ) noticed this conversation and I think is going to make me watch it next time I visit so I'll be able to tell you what I thought.

wow this beautiful . i like the harshness of the barb-wire against the beauty of the sunset

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

disgracian In reply to ozfiz-rox [2005-09-09 02:20:41 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for noticing. I went for a slight DoF effect to make the barbed wire sharply in focus and the horizon line slightly out of focus for that very reason.

lovely work yet again. i really love the angle of the fence more in this shot too, having more barbed wire and the angle look great. i also think the darkness at the bottom is more appropriate for this shot, reaching up to the spectacular colours of the sky; which people locked up can't actually reaach or properly appreciate. the sentiment driving the image is equally as powerfull, a fantastic union of art and concept, driving a strong point home for us all. well done!

I never actually thought of the visual theme of the people locked inside being denied the beauty of this country, but it does add another layer to what this piece is trying to say. Well spotted!
