Description you thought you could bury your blackened past
but I'm here now to dig it up and throw it in your face.
(the smoky scent in your clothes you can't wash out-
but the criminal always returns to the scene)
you're brazen now, smiling at your wasteland
yet you ran like a wild animal from the crime
red-eyed, red-cheeked, red heart beating panic
I was the one who held you and soothed your guilt away
but, dear phoenix, I should have strangled you then
instead of letting you free to rain sparks
I should have taken that ugly hatchling and snapped its neck.
your burns have healed, but what of you?
how many more times will the great and terrible phoenix
scorch the sky and rise from the ashes in triumph?
(ungrateful bird. you're immortal, aren't you?
I'm burning my hands in vain.
you live off the ashes left behind.)
