Description
The Moddey Dhoo is one of the "Black Dogs" of Britain. He is an omen of death and disaster, and is seen as bad luck. He looks like a huge black dog the size of a large calf, with glowing red eyes that seem to let off gas or some other substance. He is associated with the Black Shuck, another Black Dog.There is a legend from the Isle of Man about Peel Castle. It happened several hundred years ago, when castles were still relied on for protection from enemies. One night, a huge black dog "as big as a calf and with eyes like pewter plates", came and lay down in the guard-chamber in front of all the soldiers. It began to appear in other rooms, and the soldiers soon lost their initial shock and terror. There was once a passage that led to the chamber belonging to the Captain of Guard, and the dog, which the soldiers called the Mauthe Doog, would go back to the passage at daybreak and come out again at sundown.
A drunken guard said he would lock up the castle alone, in stead of in pairs as was usually done. When he was done with this, he said he would go through the haunted passage to give the keys to the Captain of the Guard. He went in and there were horrible noises. The guard ran out, horribly frightened and unable to speak. He died three days later, and the dog never returned to Peel Castle.
I took inspiration from Gunnerkrigg Court and Tom's drawing of this amazing creature. Enjoy!
