Description

The Codex of the Arcanes was crafted by a circle of archmages at the apex of the Astral Convergence, an event where the boundaries of magic are at their thinnest. Each rune and glyph on its cover is a seal containing the raw force of arcane energy, collected from various points of power across the realms. But such power does not come without its dangers, as the tome is also infused with the chaotic essence of the convergence, making its magic unpredictable and often, treacherous.

Properties of the Codex of the Arcanes:
Arcane Amplifier: Spells cast from the Codex are maximized, dealing the maximum possible damage or having the maximum possible effect.
Astral Recall: The user can cast teleport once per day without expending a spell slot, guided by the astral maps within the Codex.
Glyphs of Containment: The Codex has the ability to contain magical creatures. By reading an incantation, the user can attempt to bind an extraplanar entity within the book's runes for up to 24 hours.

Curses of the Codex of the Arcanes:
Astral Backlash: Each time the Arcane Amplifier is used, the caster must succeed on a DC 18 Intelligence saving throw or become the target of a random spell effect from the book.
Convergence Whiplash: After using Astral Recall, the caster is affected by a random planar effect from the Astral Plane, determined by the DM, which could range from gaining a temporary boon to suffering a debilitating condition.
Sealed Fates: If the binding through Glyphs of Containment fails, the user may become marked by the entity they attempted to bind, subjecting them to its vengeance once it is free.

Use in Campaign: The Codex of the Arcanes is a powerful artifact that could be the center of a quest to harness the converging magical energies for good or ill. It could also be a legacy item that arcane scholars aspire to possess, despite the risks, for the pure pursuit of knowledge and power. Characters might seek to unlock its secrets, master its curses, or perhaps even use it to bind an antagonistic force threatening their world.
