Specialist Michael Longo (SP4), 9th Infantry Division, poses with his M16 rifle equipped with the revolutionary AN/PVS-1 "Starlight", a GEN1 passive night vision device fielded for the first time in the late 1960's for combat use in South-East Asia. These 1st GEN scopes were heavy, bulky and of marginal effectiveness; nevertheless they gave an important boost to the development of the modern night vision devices. 23 October 1967, Bearcat Base, Mekong Delta, Republic of Vietnam.
