it took me like four years to actually understand how they work, and i've spent another four trying to get better at that understanding

they're just something about them that is deceptively difficult to draw

what helps me though is drawing over pictures and screencaps of toothless to develop a sense of how i'd draw his shapes
then i try drawing him on my own
it's called the shrimp method- is really helpful
