Just curious, but has Urchin been keeping track of how long he's been trapped in that shackle, using some form of tally marks? Or has he completely lost track of how long he's been imprisoned?

Good question! He has no idea, which also means he doesn't even know how old he is, ahahah. I'd imagine down there he'd even have trouble tracking whether its day or night!

Good point. I should've realized that he's so far deep down that he's probably in the Bathyal/Midnight zone at the least. I know he's screwed up because of the pain he's in, but I'm surprised that he's as sane as he is given that he has no way of judging the passage of time.
One of the reasons why I'm asking this is because I heard in the 1950s the US conducted clinical studies in which the participants were put in sensory deprivation chambers and were given no means as to tell that time was passing. The result was that many of them went a little crazy by not being able to tell the passage of time.
There's gotta be some way Urchin/Rurek can tell. He could've had that Goblin Shark or another sea creature swim close to the surface and inform him as to when it's day or night. Also the ocean's current causing the coral and kelp to move could also be an indication that time is flowing.

I find stuff like that so interesting! I also had a look into what happens when people are isolated and have no social contact with anyone else for very long periods of time. The shark evidently saved him in more ways than just one.
He's definitely not quite right with his mental state, but it could have been a lot worse if not for the shark and other animals.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did you say in a previous comment that that Goblin Shark is one of the only creatures that genuinely CARES about Urchin? Are there any other sea creatures that Urchin/Rurek is friends with, if so what are they? And finally has the Goblin Shark over the years offered to bite off his hand in order to free him?

If you can find that comment, I'll believe I said it. The Shark is the "main" one, though he does know a couple of other animals and doesn't rely on the shark for absolutely everything. Being in there for 14 years would mean he is familiar with several things that live in there too, even if not quite on the same level as the Goblin shark
and as far as I'm aware, thats not really something a Goblin Shark is capable of, even if he wouldnt just bleed to death afterwards
