What do you use then? Jigsaw? You work is very detailed, I just assumed you used a scrollsaw.

It's a good idea, but I'm actually more comfortable holding my jigsaw in my hand. I've tried a real scroll saw and I found out I'm not as accurate with it than I am with my small jigsaw ... although I guess it's only a matter of habit, I'd need to get used of working with a scroll saw first. Then I'd probably prefer a scroll saw ...

What type of glue do you use to attach pieces together? And do you use a belt sander? by hand? Is the MDF heavy?
Sorry for 20 questions, love this tutorial and interested in making my own props.

I mainly use neoprene and wood glue.Β
I've never used a belt sander, but I'd love to have one Β
I use a cheap vibrating sander, my dremel with sanding tips, and I also sand by hand.
MDF weight about 700 kg/m3, so it's 7/10 the density of water ... not heavy, but not really light neither ...
This tutorial is a bit old, but the only other one I made more recently is all in french ...
Good luck for crafting your own props ^^

You can find softwares to cut your picture so you can print it on separate sheets of paper
Look on google for : wallpaper print software ... or something like that
Personnaly I just use photoshop to cut my pictures ... because I'm used of doing it that way ^^

Thank you! I've always wondered how folks make their stuff! No small task, though! How long did this particular project take you?
Good point about carving the small details first. I would not have thought of that.
Also, I think it is Gesso in English as well. Thanks again!

Thanks
For that small axe, it took me about 7 hours from start to end ... more or less ...

yesssss this is amazing 8D Thank you so much for making this! When I stumbled upon your gallery I couldn't believe there was a tutorial in here I've always wanted to make weapons that were strong, but also awesome looking (but you know, not real) so far I've only worked with cardboard so everything is flimsy and very hard to shape :/ ooo this is so cool <3 I wish I could fav. it more than once xD

Dj3r0m In reply to DireWolfwere [2012-07-21 11:30:17 +0000 UTC]
you're welcome ^^
Actually it can be a good practice to work with layers of carboard : at least you don't need much hardware to cut it to shape ... but at the same time it can't be as strong as wood (and can't be as detailed I guess) ^^
Maybe I'll do a more detailed tutorial when I got time for that.

Yeah, but your wooden weapons look sooooo much awesomer than any cardboard weapons I've seen, though wood is also more expensive than stocking up on old cereal boxes all year XD It'd be pretty awesome if you made another tutorial 8D
