EDIT 7/21/13 -Wow, still getting comments on this one? XDAgain, guys.... This whole thing is Half a joke. While the changes actually DO kind of bother me between the first and second films... it doesn't mean that I am raging mad about this. This is meant to be funny, but obviously the jokes will cater more to people who agree with the jokes. So if you take offense to this or if you think I really am soo raging angry about this? Lighten up. I do actually enjoy the second TLK film. Mostly for the Outlanders, but never the less I do enjoy it. For what it was the animation was as good as it was going to get. And it's sort of impressive at some points. But yes, different teams of animators, different studios, and look at what it had to live up to. My Goodness, TLK1 is a tough act to follow.
One of the reasons why such a change would bother me, is because as an artist who draws these characters, I like to be as on model as I can. And I get so used to the way they look in one film (the first film), that such a jarring change can be, well, jarring. And can just "urk" me or any other artist who feels the same way. That's it. The changes didn't really bother me much as a kid, though I noticed them, and only REALLY started to become a bit more noticeable when I got into drawing fan-art for the movie.
So again, guys, these are jokes. It's not like I am taking such offense to the changes. They just bother me.
EDIT 1/22/13- Okay guys, seeing as I am STILL getting comments on this one. let point out a few things....
1. This whole thing is Half a joke. While the changes actually DO bother me between the first and second films... it doesn't mean that I am raging mad about this.
2. "Oh there were different artists working on the films".
Yes, that is true. Both movies were made at different studios with different teams of artists. But I have seen FAN-artists who draw fairly on model to the first film, if they can do it, why couldn't professional artists??
3. "They had a cub, maybe they are older now?"
Okay... the last scene in the first film is supposed to be the first scene in the second film. The characters looks quite different. I used the color refs from both scenes, which are supposed to be the same scene. In-yet there are still those differences. It just boils down to this, and I remember seeing this on a special behind the scenes feature for the second film. They wanted to show pride rock from a darker side, which is why they darkened the whole movie. From an artistic point of view? Sure I can see it. But on a design point of view? They still changed some things about the characters. Color wise, shape wise, and soo on, that did not need to be changed. Again, different companies made the films. With different teams of artists.
But still, they didn't have to Mufasa-ize Simba. And make Nala more mature looking(and dipped in bleach, her eyes are blur green, not lightning blue!!). Especially since not that much time goes by, if any at all between the ending of the first film, and the start of the second. Even so, the rest of the second film? While Kiara is still a cub, I dont think there'd be much of a difference in their designs. Because technically that's just months going buy, as lions age faster than humans do. But when Kiara is a young adult? THEN I can see them being aged more. Because that could have been longer, maybe a year or two?
However, not matter what we say, do, or try to rationalize as fans of these films. The fact of the matter is that there are still differences. And that's that.
So you can stop commenting "maybe they're older? They had babies! Different artists made the films" because
1. I know.
2. Soo many other people have left me those comments over and over again, so you don't really need to. Or fish through the comments and see if someone has already commented what you wanna comment. Because it's getting irritating. I could solve it by disabling comments. But I don't really want to.
End Edit.
NO you may NOT use this image for basing, copying, tracing, altering,RPing, personal character pictures, commercial use, re-uploading, blah blah BLAH ETC.....
After receiving a call from Nala about her stunt double Moira getting her role in the second TLK film.... Simba decided to make a surprise visit to the set.... Only to meet the same fate... Even he was being shut out of the second film! And was being replaced by his stunt double Matt!!!
Simba caused an Uproar (pun intended) and was escorted off set. Called his lawyer, and lost his case! When he asked the question of "Why" ...... he was told "Matt costs less money than you Simba..... So the creators of the film were looking to save a buck, because you are just TOO expensive......"
Hurrr hurr huur........ I drew this because I KNEW people were gonna ask for it, and amazingly enough, I'm surprised I actually stomached it. His design in the second film bothered me soo much that sometimes my stomach turns!
(THE DIFFERENCES KILL ME!!!! D8 )
Soo here you have it,
On the left we have Simba from the first film, A young adult with a full mane, soo we know he's not a teen.... and then on the right, we have older Simba from TLK2......much more rounder, darker, FATTER, and a huge mane...... Basically, trying to "Mufasa-ize" him in the second film.... but to me, they failed. Mufasa was more muscular and defined without being ripped, and yes, Mufasa had a belly to him, and a huge nose.
BUT!!!!
Before anyone goes "Oh he grew up and had more food in the second film!!"
1. Even though he lived off bugs in the first film.... he was STILL thicker than Scar..... And Scar got all the food, even though there was a lack of food..... he still ate more than the rest of the lionesses and hyena, because he's selfish.... and the only ones who complained of no food were Nala and the hyena....... So though he obviously did have more food, thats still no reason for him to have BALLOONED up in the second film, honestly they seemed to have tried to make him seem like Mufasa, and again.... That ended in a fat FAIL.
2. True in the first film They show that from cub to adult , their fur colors Darken in age, but this is ridiculous. And again, don't say age...... They even stated in the second film that they wanted to show everything from the other side of Priderock..... so they tried to make everything darker (but still they seemed to have dipped Nala in bleach and made her LIGHTER instead of "darker"..... for that see this image ) But MY GOD! At the end of the first film, They characters look normal and have a cub, (they called Fluffy, we want to call Kopa, but in the end, lets face it, we HAVE to call Kiara.... because no matter what we want to believe, Kiara is the ONLY cub they have in the movies.... which blows really.) And the lighting/art was superb at the end of the first film, then we cut to the second film's beginning, then everything is darker(except Nala!), and all around different!!! (You can say "Because it's two different cubs!!!!"...... But again, the fact of the matter is that according to the Films, Kiara is their only cub : .... weather we like it or not.) So to say that they aged, is nonsense..... That is supposed to be the SAME cub from the first film, so we can honestly say that is was poor film-making right there.
Then again, it was just a direct to video sequel from the 90s... so for what it was, it was an okay made film... Just not as grand as the original, and with different animators. Just a good way to make a buck right?? Plus it has more plot-holes than a cheetah has spots!
And as far as Simba's attitude goes in the second film?
EH
He was a very indecisive youg adult lion in the first film... It's no wonder he'd be a nervous parent.... And not as stellar as a king as Mufasa.........but still, as an audience, we expected more from him.
ALSO! His mane is massive, and way...WAY less detailed. And that damn round chin, not even Mufasa had that, or Sarabi!!!
I love how much more Rugged and detailed he was in the first film, and his colors POPPED soo much more.
ANYWHO
I'm out of things to say.
Simba, stop eating the krispy creams, stop with the fake tanning, and stop with the hair gel. (you are NOT from Jersey Shore!!!)

srsly? I caught about 5 minutes of the second film on youtube and it was quite obvious that it still the classic second tier Disney movie. (AKA BAD) The travesty that they actually made a sequel is enough for me to hate it.

I *love* these. I always thought about the differences I saw in the two movies (Which happen to be my favorite movies ever.. even though I'm 23. Whatever, I'm proud!) But I've never seen it illustrated next to each other. It looks epic. Keep up the awesome work!

I remember all the anticipation for the second film. I completely overlooked any differences I saw in the previews out of sheer excitement, then I finally watched it all. To me all the lions were either much too round or made out to be strange scar clones. It was bothersome that any bad lion had to look different, as right at the end they all miraculously shapeshifted into rounder bodies. The way they just seemed to rush from incident to incident as though it were aping the first film was also rather frustrating. The story could have been made into something much more interesting, even with the simple plot.

If you look closely enough at the Outlander lionesses, the amount of blatant copy+pasting going on is totally hilarious. At least in the first movie with the stampede scene, they took the time to make sure each individual Wildebeest had a different color palette than the rest.
Just goes to show how much they cared about putting effort into the sequel. xD

"Hi's mane is massive, and way...WAY less detailed. And that damn round chin"
"I love how much more Rugged and detailed he was in the first film, and his colors POPPED soo much more."
......is terrible but it's also the fact that this is all true, I hated the new Simba soon as I saw it when I was a kid and even today I do not swallow it the "new version"...
besides the fact that I see people all over interner implying about the lion king two and. ... personally... with all the holes the history was better in the sense of history that the first
involves people with Kovu and Kiara .... but for me they were the best and offset the slobber Simba and the zero or nearly invisible apparition of Nala
and Sarabi? she died?>XDDDD
haha i saw no sign of her anywhere and not this movie made ββno mention of it tooXD
but honestly, maybe it was even better this way :/
would be terrible if she changed for the worse the same way it did with Simba >.o"
People talk about Kopa but I thank God that it was canceled and cut of the film
would be very boring to see lion king AGAIN one second, the idea of ββbeing shown a lion this time was far more interesting
out that it was a boring copy of Simba with a red tuft on the head to differentiate it
which does not make sense Oá" because at that age of cub, lions do not have tufts of hair already colored like he did....O.< thank god it was Kiara and not Kopa ¬¬
but I also hated how the cubs have completely changed from one movie to another...uu*

They probably got less-experienced artists to animate SP, which is why all the characters looked ALOT less detailed and more cartoony. :/
They should've just hired the same animaters from the first film, or atleast hired people that could draw the characters right.

And...
In TLK2 Kovu is not Scar's cub, yet looks identical to him and Nuka is Scar's yet barely resembles him...
So who is Kovu's father? And Vittani as well-she looks like her mother, Zira. Is there a rouge lion out there?
And since prides normally have one male, as shown in TLK, then does Simba get to 'procreate' with all the lady lions? Hmmm?
And WHY did we not see more of teenage Simba? Where his mane is just barely starting to grow. There was an episode of Timon and Pumbaa where he was a teenager, but that's it. Maybe you should do a fanart of that. *hint hint ;3* And I would have liked to see more of Nala's coming of age and how she deals with her best friends 'death.'
And thank you for making me feel like I'm not the only one bugged by the cheaper animation in the second film. I still love it though. Kovu=<3
*hugs*

You know? I was watching The Lion King (again lol) the other day and I happened to notice something I'd never noticed before..... and I got to wondering. I figure if anyone really knows the answer, it'd be you, so I hope you don't mind if I ask
Here's my question (and it's about the film, not your art):
What's with Simba's eyes? During his fight with nala, the scleras of Simba's eyes are yellow (as I had thought they were throughout the movie), but then I suddenly noticed that during the night scene with Rafiki, his scleras are white instead
Now, for a moment I thought perhaps that they were white BECAUSE it was nightime and the colors would be more washed out or dulled down... but then I noticed that Rafiki's eyes were still yellow even though it was nighttime. Now I wonder if his eyes are randomly white elsewhere, or if they change to white whenever it's nighttime but only for lions or I don't know But I was hoping maybe you'd know... any idea?

hmm... I believe That scene was made at nearly the last second and they had some different people working on it? If I remember correctly. I could be wrong. I'd have to watch the commentary on the DVD again...
Really though, that issue has been pretty much up in the air. No one can say if it's a mistake or if it was done for a reason.

Good to know that I'm not the only one who noticed these things. I hated Simba's Pride, which is why I don't feature any of the characters from that film in my fan art drawings. The only tolerable character was Kovu. The rest were obnoxious and over the top. The cub at the end of the first was definitely a male, and should have been Kopa. Also, Pride Rock was BROWN in the 2nd film. BROWN..........(insert the "WTF IS THIS SHIT?" Picard picture)

I gotta say I really like how you drew the Lion King 2 Simba (is that a bad thing?)! Even though they say that he is "older" in the second film, I think the changes were rather extreme. I'm not sure if the end of the first movie is supposed to be the beginning of the second one or not, but I can't really see this because Simba can't become older (or mutate, ha) all of a sudden. And the first movie seemed later in the day while Lion King 2 is early in the morning.
In my opinion, Simba in Lion King 2 has a good style in general if he was supposed to be a different Lion. But it being still the same lion is strange as he looks too different.

I do think 'rugged-teen' Simba looked waaaay much better than 'neatly-combed' Simba, kinda like Rob Pattinson with gel-combed hair.
My memory of their appearance was rather dim (last I watched it was waaaay back in 1998!) but after watching both comparisons, I do felt the original still looked the best.
Btw, what do you think of the 3rd film? I know it doesn't feature much Simba or Nala, just wanna get your opinion.

Good observations. I didn't even notice the different character designs (I was distracted by Zazu's new VA). I could see that the animation quality was poorer, but that was it.
And as much as fanficcers love their Kopa/Fluffy theories, it's clear that in the official canon, Kiara was the only cub Simba and Nala had. I know this because in TLK 3d, they changed the cub at the end to make it look like Kiara.
