Genma is a Scarecrow, a martyr chosen (created?) by his people to protect them from the wrath of the "Kuroujs", a race of beings that sustain themselves by feeding off the essence of their victims. Genma is constantly pursued by Gabriel Salvius, a Kurouj who seems to have an eery familiarity with him. All around them questions abound: Why must the Kuroujs feed only on the people whom Genma protects, and why has Genma never seen the faces of those who's lives he safeguards, their faces shrouded in mysterious masks? Why do all of the Kuroujs have memories of Genma, even those who have never faced him?
Gabriel and Genma's battle has only just begun, and the truth will be seen in the sparks of their blades...
