Manticores are Ziz that were once native to Turkey, Lebanon & Syria where numbers were rare but now had become an increasingly detrimental problem the moment the first Manticore was smuggled into District 01Hz. Sightings of these Ziz have been recorded from Redwood forests, rocky canyons, deserts to even the snow peaked tundras. District 01Hz became a Red zone where Manticore populations exploded slaughtering & driving survivors out claiming London as its territory turning the city into a colonial nesting ground.

ECOLOGICAL NICHE

With a deadly arsenal Manticores are biologically armed to the teeth, so far to the point where they can make short work of their unfortunate victims with little ease. Common prey for the predatory Ziz include wild animals like deer, wolves, mountain lions & bears but will readily take on other Neofauna when nearby. Manticores are also well renowned man eaters decimating human settlements viciously & are considered a mandatory termination target to every Paladin Hunter whenever their sightings are pinned as their population needs to be urgently controlled.

Manticores were advantageous affecting the ecological food web of Neofauna. Their numbers grew exponentially & considered anything in their sights as food. Being aggressively territorial they have been known to attack, bully or even kill other Neofauna often driving them out of their territories ultimately leading to a devastating imbalance to the ecosystem.

BIOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS

Manticores are a breed of Ziz of the Winged beast variety & a dangerous one at that. Possessing the most powerful wings of any Winged beast Ziz, Manticores use their wings as both for adept powered flight & the perfect hunting tools. These strong forewings are incredibly muscular capable of running down prey & pinning even the most heftiest of quarries to the ground.

Unlike felids the jaws of the Manticore is lamniforme in physiology, particularly that of the great white shark. In total the Manticore possesses 3,000 serrated teeth in their mouth in multiple rows on their upper & lower jaw. Upon loosing a single one that tooth is almost instantly replaced where it slides in place. The jaws of the Manticore is incredibly powerful where it’s able to exert a bite force over 4,000 psi. Upon grasping prey in its jaws it’ll ferociously shake the prey shredding flesh to pieces causing major lacerations. Manticores consume a total of 11 tons of meat in a year often targeting prey that’s high in fat, however the Ziz will exceed this quantity to stockpile in the case of reproduction. These Hatchlings develop fast, breaking free from these sacs within days & already are well developed to hunt & fend for themselves. Due to the severe reproduction rate of these Ziz, a single Manticore can produce a batch of six within a month though this cycle requires them to be fully fed to carry out this process. It’s because of this Hunters are tasked to exterminate Hatchlings & egg sacs in addition to laying out poisoned meat to bait fully grown adults. Although completely immune to various poisons & other dangerous chemicals when ingested they do however sterilise the embryonic sac, killing the Hatchling inside therefore spewing forth blanks.
