A daunting frame, gnarled tusks & glowing yellow eyes, Oni are ferocious monsters that seem to be conjured by the allegorical rantinge of delusional politicians. Equipped with a breath so ravenous one would mistaken it for hellfire.
— Grimoire passage from the Tapster
HABITAT RANGE
Historically, Oni occupied the majority of North America's forested regions. In the present, they are primarily limited to sparsely settled, forested areas. A major populous congregation inhabit much of the Canadian range, though they seldom occur in the southern farmlands of Alberta & Manitoba, in which a total of the Oni population ranges between 396,000 to 476,000.
The current range of Oni in the United States is constant throughout within the majority of the northeast as well as the Appalachian mountains, Maine to Northern Georgia. However other sightings range within the remnants of Ohio, Illinois & Indiana.
It had been speculated that the American Oni had once descended from the Asian Oni before making landfall onto the Neo Americas. It had been theorised that the species may have migrated to the Western continent sometime during the epoch of the Absence using the polar bridges of the Northern Ice Realms amongst the cold border. So far the only Asian Oni species that exists presently have been distributed within southeastern regions particularly in Iran & Pakistan as well as across the foothills of the Himalayas in India. Sightings of these Oni have said to be spotted in portions of Neo Korea as well as the Japanese islands of Honshu & Shikoku.
ECOLOGICAL NICHE
Oni share a mutualistic partnership with the Daimon species Vibrio onibe, commonly known as the Willowisp. The symbiotic relationship between the two superspecies had evolved to become of adequate design towards survival. Because of the dietary preference to practically consume almost anything both dead or alive, Willowisp colonies inhabit the intestinal tract of the Oni feeding off of decomposing matter transforming portions of its meal into nutrients needed for both species. Standards are also doubled as the colony also gain a mobile home as well as a carrier to spread for its final stages.
In return the Daimon provides an extra sense of perception for the Behemoth using its bioluminescent capabilities in the event of dangers, alternating colours as well as intensity in light alerting the Oni beforehand. Willowisps can also potentially assist the Oni at times whenever the Behemoth commands it or instinctively when the Beast is struck with an overwhelming blow from its enemy.
Oni are territorial Neofauna & are usually non gregarious in nature, behaviourally solitary. However when secured an area with an abundant food source they congregate & establish hierarchies, in which the largest & powerful dominate the most plentiful bounties.
They mark their territories by scratching trees with their clawed hooves or their gnarled tusks.
With the exception of the rare confrontation with another adult Oni, Warg packs or even Goblin tribes, adult Oni are not usually subject to natural predation. However evidenced by scat samples with fur present inside of them, Oni may occasionally fall prey to larger carnivorous Behemoths like Beserkers, Lycans & Reapers. In such scenarios, large predatory Ziz would have the advantage if it ambushed the Oni, severely harming or even killing the Behemoth from the skies. Oni cubs tend to be more vulnerable to predation than adults in which amongst these threats are adult males.
BIOLOGICAL ADAPTATIONS
The eyesight & hearing of an Oni is comparable to that of humans however their keenest sense is their sense of smell, which is about seven to eight times more sensitive than a wolf or a bear. The area inside the snout of an Oni is known as the nasal mucosa, where though it’s difficult to measure it is estimated that its 100 times greater than humans. The snout assists the Behemoth to track the scent of various potential food sources ranging from the typical vegetation contents, meat, carrion to even food sources within human settlements & villages, picking up various scent trails that is often carried between 18-20 miles but has been estimated to travel further.
Oni share a symbiotic relationship with Willowisps in which both practically benefit from each other. In nature Willowisps are Daimon who are in actuality a gram-negative bioluminescent bacterium evolved to transmute & utilise decomposing matter into sustainable energy. This is seen in the form of a floating ball of combusting gas that exudes both light, heat & energy in which the bacterium will generate much akin to that of rapid oxidation, using decomposing matter as a fuel source for exothermic combustion.
As a symbiotic partner both species benefit from each other from providing food, shelter & protection. The bioluminescence produced from the Willowisp grants an alternative light source for the Oni when traversing at night, compensating for the Behemoths poor night vision. Though despite its visual impairment the Oni can decipher colour wavelengths akin to humans & the naked red skin is incredibly sensitive at detecting changes in temperature. Willowisps will take advantage of this in a way alerting the Behemoth of potential prey or threats.
As a living weapon Oni are capable of manipulating the very potential of Willowisp colonies where the Behemoth are known to virtually command the Daimon to perform various offensive strategies against threats. At times the Oni are known to adjure Willowisps to cast a continuous stream of fire in the form of a flamethrower whereas other rare occasions can cause the Daimons to detonate much like an incendiary bomb.
BEHAVIOUR
Oni are extremely aggressive behemoths targeting anything in eyes range whether it be prey or predator. Their rage drives them to eradicate potential threats in which they deem as an affront to their territory as well as resources.
