Description I made a heavy edit on this submission (deleted the other if you didn't get the chance to see it.)

Part 4 of my 5 part series.

Made using Alchemy and Photoshop.

Will update this section once all 5 are up.

EDIT - Changed Logo, made it dark grey and changed the location.

EDIT - Reworked the contrasts, changed some of the forms. Trying to give it weight. Added the Transparent Grid Components, some highlights, removed some of the lights.

haha this really isn't like drawing. Its a lot more like collage. I make a bunch of shapes in alchemy and then I stack them in photoshop.

That said, Thanks!

How do you make these? I'm not familiar with Alchemy but I know Photoshop like a pro. I'm pretty intrigued by your work here.

Another professional, I see! Best I not reveal my secrets!

I kid. Open up alchemy (al.chemy.org). Set the effects to pull shapes, create random shapes. Once you like them, Export them as transparent PNGs. Then you bring them all in to one photoshop canvas and move them around, duplicate them, transform them, and position them as you wish. After that work your photoshop magic for neons!

Lol. Wow, simply amazing that you do not use a 3-d program to get your look. You have incredible spatial and depth recognition skills my friend, very spectacular. When I'm finished with everything that I'm currently working on (which may never happen) I'm going to attempt a piece like this. I may hit you up again for a question or two if you'd oblige. Thanks for sharing, I'm definitely going to watch you now too!

I don't have the patience to properly learn any 3D software. They're all so unwieldy and unnecessarily complex. Would still rather traditional sculpture at this point XD

But sure, get in touch if you try this, I'll give you some pointers! XD

Many thanks my friend! I think the nature of these programs has changed though, or is changing because I use to think the same but I think they are coming out with more innovative techniques and friendly UI. Not that you need these to do what you do, just that you might consider a revisit. However, I truly appreciate trad sculpting my friend. I use to do this all the time. And of course you could always scan your sculptures in if you have access to the right technology. But yeah if I get the chance I'll hit you up in the future. Thanks!

Yeah those Polygons? they make you think of alien or futuristic automatically. Idk what it is lol but I think EA games found that out when they made Crysis x)

DKDevil In reply to Xvampir3 [2012-05-07 20:26:51 +0000 UTC]

I don't actively submit to groups

The reason some of these are in groups is because they get requested.

Sweet I like the rework. And the understated logo, the old one was kind of distracting.

DKDevil In reply to Militant-Jester [2010-10-17 06:44:45 +0000 UTC]

It was. It was also partly why ConceptWorld wouldn't accept it originally.

Hopefully they'll accept it now

rickystinger88 [2010-10-16 17:36:06 +0000 UTC]

Hey. Just wanna give some crit on this. The reason I liked the characters was that the balance of black silhouette and neon works well. This concept seems to have too much neon and colour imo. I think you've took it too far. Just my 2 cents anyway. Nice style though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DKDevil In reply to rickystinger88 [2010-10-16 17:38:44 +0000 UTC]

Haha, thanks , I'm trying to put more and more detail into them so they don't just look like rearranged alchemy sketches. A few people are griping that I let alchemy do all the work, though in my opinion I don;t see a problem with that lol.

I'm just trying to give it form and depth, instead of it being a flat shape.

From the visual absence of feet or wheels, I'm guessing that this is a hovertank.
Question: size comparison -- which is bigger? The Barbarian or the Quad Tank?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DKDevil In reply to KajiTetsushi [2010-10-15 19:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Do feet require a conventional composition?

Even though they're part of a set, They are standalone sketches so I didn't determine a size refference. But the assumption is that the tank is bigger, though the barbarian could be a little taller lol.

Maybe not.

[...] the tank is bigger, though the barbarian could be a little taller [...]
Okay, then my bet says the Barbarian's a huge powered armor. =D
I'm more of a tank enthusiast, but yeah...

Offtopic:
I just watched an Alchemy demonstration by Andrew Jones. I can't believe he sketched a gigantic robot so quickly with Alchemy. I mean, that's just incredible...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DKDevil In reply to KajiTetsushi [2010-10-15 20:29:22 +0000 UTC]

heh, Alchemy if fun for that, getting your composition down and then working with it. I do find many artists who claim that people who use alchemy aren't artists though, to which I reply "Damien Hirst exposed a dead cow's severed head, and he's one of today's most successful artists. You might want to rethink that."

oh, and thanks for all the s by the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KajiTetsushi In reply to DKDevil [2010-10-15 21:01:45 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.

I don't think Jones wanted to replace other raster editors with Alchemy, judging by his demonstration. Alchemy's probably a concept art speed booster, to get you to work on the real deal quickly.

I mean, the video shows that it's good for making robot silhouettes. Alchemy looks like the perfect tool for concept artists, because when I look at their steps, they usually like to start with silhouettes first, then the final picture. I see that it can really help painters get that momentum back they need when they're on dry wells and artist's blocks.

Now, if Damien Hirst didn't intentionally cut off the cow's head just for an exhibit, then it's probably more acceptable. I don't know... I'm not into those things anyway so I'm not that concerned. I respect the "to each his own" policy wherever and whenever possible. If I don't like it, I just leave it alone and walk away.

DKDevil In reply to KajiTetsushi [2010-10-15 21:39:03 +0000 UTC]

Silhouettes are definitely my favorite part to work with, though I should develop them more.

I respect your policy

Anyways... nice work! The massive change in the size of the foot claws in front, considering the scale, is a little disorienting though. :/

yeah it looks a little Iffy right there. I should have messed with the foreground leg a bit more to make it look as it were facing us. oh well, I'll keep it in mind for my next pieces.
